MRS. A. M. McELYEA
Executive Director, Pisgah Girl Scout Council
Throughout the United States there are over
700,000 men and women who believe with Girl ..
Scouting's founder, Juliette Gordon Low: "Youth is
the time of the possible, the time when the mind is -open
and simple . . . It is for us the leaders to develop r
girls' courage, protect their confidence, and train
their hands and their hearts to serve eagerly and ,
purposefully their homes and their nation."
At the present time there are three active troops
in Marshall and Walnut Mrs. Clyde Roberta is Neigh
borhood Chairman and welcomes any requests to
give assistance in forming new troops. Community
groups in Spring Creek, Hot Springs, Mars Hill, Bull
Creek and White Rock are urged to get in touch with "
Mrs. Roberts or Mrs. O. A. Gregory for information
concerning the possibility of having Girl Scouting in
those communities. Efforts will be made in the conn
ing weeks to acquaint the parents of Madison Coun-.
ty with the opportunities for Scouting for their girls.
A special Brunswick Stew-dinner, to be served
at the annual REA meeting in Marshall, will launch
the annual fund raising campaign of the Pisgah Girl
Scout Council on Saturday, April 21. This event will ,
precede a door-to-door campaign on April 24. $33,-

one of the 13 counties of the Pisgah Council area and svV
is asked to contribute through its citizenry a share of
the budget. $682.00 is the amount considered to be
the fair share according to population, girls served,
and capacity to give of the communities affected.
Mr. Ray Frisby and Mrs. Liston Ramsey of Mar

the communities' responsibility in this matter. Mrs.

Operating funds provided in the Council's bud

leaders, and organizing troops; provide day camping
each year in Marshall; make it possible for girls to
attend an Established Camp in Brevard at a moder

LETTERS TO
THE EDITOR...
1 J31
Dear Mr. Story:
We would like to call to the at
tention of your readers the fact
that from now through May 15
we in Madison Cuonty will try
through personal solicitation and
one fund-riasing event to raise
$682.00, which is our county's
share of the operating budget of
Pisgah Girl Scout Council in the
current year. We have had no
special drive for funds in four
years, except for the capital funds
drive last year for camp develop
raent. , The county United Fund
effort did not provide the funds
needed in either of these four
years, and this failure caused con
siderable , stress with the council
finance group who was respon
sible for making the necessary ad
justments. Solicitors will be call
ng on as many persons as pos
sible, and with the shortage of
volunteer help, the cooperation of
all our citizens will be necessary.
Letters are being written to ma
ny organized groups in the county,
and the committee hopes that oth
er fund-raising events will not be
necessary. The Madison County
portion is only 2 of the : thir-
teen-county total.
We hojflt that during the month
we will be given opportunities to
tell of the .. services of Pisgah
Council and to inform communi
ties' of the Girl Scout program.
Madison County has a girl popu
lation of 1,311 girls, white and
non-white, between the ages of
seven ' and seventeen, though we
have fewer than 100 girls in the
program - at present. - Volunteer
adult leadership is necessary, and
this requirement is also the inev
itable restriction. If our county
had no girls in Scouting at this
time, we would most certainly
want to support Pisgah Council
for the contribution it is making
toward helping girls of Western
North Carolina become happy and
resourceful citizens. We . know
that in this matter ours will not
be a delinquent county.
Thank you for your invaluable
support
. Sincerely,
MRS. O. A. GREGORY
