C, Sun day due to the serious illness of an uncle. Miss Wanda Moore and broth er, (Jrover, were in Hot Springs over the weekend, visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Moore. Services for Michael Ray Pow ell. 2, son of Mr. and Mrs. Owl Powell, former residents of Mara Rill, war held at 2:80 p. m., Sat urday In the chapel of Holcombe Funeral Home. The Rev. Harlon Ramsey and the Rev. Ed Penland officiated and burial was in Chandler Cem etery. The child died Wednesday, Feb ruary 6, 1964 in a Newport News, Va. hospital after a long illness. Surviving beside the parents are two sisters, Deborah and Don na, and a brother, Paul, all of the home. Pallbearers were Harlon and Lon Honeycutt, Walter Banks, Edward Ballard, and Leonard and Woodrow Chandler. Herman Payne, Native Of County, Buried Sunday Mr. Thurl Myers Pastes Last Friday; Funeral Held Sun. Mra. Thurl Myers, 40, of Mar ahall Rt. 2, died Friday morning, February 7, 1944, at bar home af ter a brief illness. Services war bold at 2:30 p. m., Sunday at Grandview Baptist Church. The Rot. Howard Ogle and the Rev. John Goforth officiated and burial waa in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Ralph Kent Jr., David Gentry, Clyde Stepp, Luther Nix, Gordon Rice, and David Hughes. Surviving are the husband; a son, Thurl Calvin Myers of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Clarence Nix of Marshall, Mrs. E. B. Gos nell of Asheville and Mrs. Dillard Gentry of Marshall Rt 6; and two brothers, Robert West of Rt ! and Winfred West of Candler. Bowman Funeral Home was in charge. Morganton, a furniture work er, died at his home Thursday, February 6, 19(54, of a gunshot wound which Dr. John Reese, Burke County coroner, said was self-inflicted. Mr. Payne was a native of Madison County, a son of Mrs. Blanche Hampton Payne of Wal nut and the late Ervin M. Payne. In addition to the mother, sur vivors are the widow. Mrs. Pearl Goforth Payne; a son, Dennis, of the home; two daughters. Mrs. Jennings Taylor of Morganton and Mrs. Melvin Houck of Rt. 2; three brothers, Ralph of Ashe ville Ohlen of Houston, Texas, and I. eland Payne of Canton; two sisters, Mrs. General Baker of Al exander and Mrs. Paul Henderson of Walnut, ami two grandchil dren. Services were held at 11 a. m., Sunday at Bowman Funeral Home. The Rev. T. B. Deese officiated and burial was in Crooked Ridge Cemetery. Nephews were pall bearers, and nieces were flower bearers. Bowman Funeral Home was in charge. BIG BRANCH T. H. BAIRD, Correspondent We were very sorry to learn that Mrs. Chester Fisher is in an Asheville hospital. We hope she will soon be well and back home. Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Goforth and two sons of Candler were visiting on the Branch on Sunday of last week. We were sorry to learn that Mr. J. M. Jarvis has been sick so long. We hope he will soon be better. Sleepy Valley H.D Club Met With Mr. Dewey Foster The Sleepy Valley HD Club met with Mrs. Dewey Foster, Wednes day, February 5th, at 2 p. m. Mrs. Foster, vice president, prer sided over the meeting. Mrs. Wal ters had charge of the devotions. The seretary, Mrs. Manley Holt read the minutes of our last meeting. Dues were collected.
