MHWHMIh N. a, MAT 7, 1M4 Public Welfare Services Are Important To Aged, Says State Welfare Commissioner "Public Welfare In North Caro lina is serving an increasing num ber of elderly persons," stated It. Eugene Brown, Commissioner of Public Welfare. The week of May 3-9, designated by Governor San ford as the Special Week on Ag ing, emphasizes services to the aged as well as the special needs of this age group. Resides financial assistance, Commissioner Brown pointed out that public welfare service to the aged include counseling with eld erly persons to help them plan to continue to live normally in their own homes, visits by caseworkers to licensed homes for the aged and family care homes to help opera tors meet the varied needs of the persons in their care, homemaker service for aged persons who with a little assistance can remain in their own homes, and counseling with relatives to help them resol ve plans for elderly persons i" their families. "The welfare of our older citi zens is one of the primary con cerns of public welfare," added Commissioner Brown. "Through casework services in the 100 coun ty departments of public welfare in North Carolina, we seek to make workable plans which satis fy the needs of both family and aged relatives." North Carolina has approxima tely ,'!44,0OO persons 65 years of age and over and this segement of our population is rapildy increas ing. The total population of the state doubled from 1910 to 1960, while the number of older people increased fourfold during this period. Even more striking is the fact this age group doubled dur ing the two decades 1940-1960. Financial help through old age assistance is available to needy aged persons who meet eligibility requirements under law. Non-fi nancial services are available to older persons irrespective of their income. North Carolina law provides for a special hospitalization program to pay for medical care for pers ons 65 years and over, who can get along on their own resources un til they have serious illness requir ing hospitalization. A new medical program for the aged, made pos sible by 1963 legislation, is sche duled to go into effect at an early date. . th. wa..co,o I H Engmgineat Announced m mm m m. USE0FAIDRIN WILL CONTROL WIRE WORMS Wire worma do considerable damage to both corn and tobac co in Madison County each year. These small hard bodied worms penetrate the stalk and destroy loth com and tobacco. They are usually found in large numbers in the damper sections of a fielld where weeds or fescue have been plowed under. The population is usually large enough to cause damage. Farmers may control this insect by applying two pounds of actual aldrin per acre. If your dealer has aldrin in a 5 per cent mixture, this means you snouia apply 40 pounds per acre. A cy clone seed sower is ideal for ap plying this insecticide. For maxi mum results, aldrin should be ap plied two weeks prior to plant ing corn or setting tobacco. It should be disked into the soil im mediatelly after application. bbbbbI crops, fruits or small fruits, flow ers, Christmas trees or other or namentals.
