RESCUE FAILS; 5 DIE Opelika. Ala. Bryant Jones, electrician, dropped his glasses in to a ten-foot deep hole part filled with dye-carrying waste water at the Pepperell Company here. He climbed down to the pit through a small opening to try to retrieve them. Four companions, one at a lime, squeezed through the open ing in an attempt to rescue Jones, not realizing that the man ahead was in danger. All five perished, victims of poisonous hydrogen sul phide gas which rises from the waste water.
