TODAYS MEDITATION READ PSALM 107:23 31 Without were firhtinjrs. within were fears. Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus. (II Corinthians 7:5-6). We were on board a small ship crossing the strait from Tasmania to Melbourne. Unfortunately for all on board, we ran into a severe storm. The boat was tossed about like a small chip of wood in the Burging seas. Mv onlv comfort that night was the knowledge that in spite of the fearsome power of the storm, God's power was far greater. The apostle Paul writes about similar experiences of our human weaknesses and need, but he high lights the almighty power and pre sence of God to help in times oi distress. This is both an ancient lesson and ene for today. Perhaps the strug gle is financial. It may be illness br difficulties within the family. It mav even be facing physical danger. Whatever it is, we need to remember that this word oi Paul to the Christians in Corinth: "Nevertheless God . . . comfort eth those that are cast down." Prayer: Father in heaven, we thru August 1. C. 7-23c Millions of small fish had Jammed the water intakes far out In Lake Michigan, arjd had died there. It wa, of course, a major operation to clear them all away and make sure that Chicago's drinking water was un contaminated. It is of the utmost importance, always, that the water, we drtak is nure and fresh, and this la no lea so where spiritual matters are concerned. The Bible has much to say about stagnant water, and foul water, and poisoned water, but the spiritual life of those who trust in Christ for salvation is called "the pure water of life," doubtless because it is so whole some and refreshing. Perhaps the reader will recall the picture our Lord drew for that sinful Samaritan woman at tne well of Sychar. John 4:10-14 telll how He and the Samaritan woman discussed Jacob's well. Somehow She seemed to sense that He was contrasting her vain pursuit of pleasure with eternal life, when He said: "Whosoever drinketh of this wa ter shall thirst again, but whoso ever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him, a fountain of wa ter, springing up into everlasting life" (Vers. 13, 14). How true this is! The pleasures of this world do not satisfy. Men keep pursuing them to keep from being bored, but the everlasting life that God gives to those who trust in Christ is a never-ending source of refreshment and joy. And it provides the greatest in centive to serve Him. Those who possess the joy of oin foro-iven and of peace with God naturally long to serve and Bervice exceot that which springs from genuine gratitude and love, !? ,"e rZ ; i,lt registered in the court house We love Him because He first t loved us" (I John 4:19).
