1 Sunday School Lesson for FEBRUARY 28, IMS These easements are m m outlhtos ef the Utonf tiaaal Saadar School Leo- MM, copyrighted by the la- tarnation! Council of Re- Kg too. Baocation, ana seed by CHRISTIAN FORGIVENESS Memory Selection: "Be kind to one another, forgiving one anoth er, aa Gad in Chrlat forgave yon." (Ephesians 4:32). LESSON TEXT: Matthew 17 through 18. Today the text of our lesson dwells on the virtue of forgive ness perhaps the most common ly flouted of all the virtues by mankind as a whole ... if only because the opportunity to prac tice forbearance and forgiveness of wrongs done to us to presents itself to us almost daily as we pur sue our daily lives, and, being hu man, we are not always as strong in our Christian faith as we would ofttimes like to believe we are! If we but reflect for a moment, we will have to admit that there are few teachings of Jesus that are more disturbing than what he had to say on the subject of for giveness! For, while we draw com fort from HIS forgiveness, it, in turn, puts an obligation on our shoulders to dispense its bounty to others as freely as it was dis pensed to us. The parable of the kindly ruler and the debtor slave illustrates this principle for us very vividly! And so does Jesus" discourse with the Disciple Peter upon this subject. For Peter (how human he was!) put a limit on forgiveness, and even then thought that he was be ing very generous, when he ask ed the Lord Jesus if he should for give his brother seven times. Je sus (how Christlike he was!) re plied: "I do not say to you seven times, hut seventy times seven." Even then, Jesus did not intend that a numerical limit be set on forgiveness of a fellow man: he shower very clearly that forgiveness was to be practiced even to infinity. He was asking no more of mankind than he of fered humanity. Therein lies the glory of the gift anVi the ob ligation! Forgiveness .taught Jesus, was to bo arrived at through effort It was not to be attempted Just once; it was to be a eontinaoas effort. And it was not to be a docile ad The one who had been sinned against was not to ait idly by and wait to be approached by the offender, trying to make res titution. He was to go to the one who had sinned against him, bring the nutter out into the open, and try to restore a brotherly rela tionship; should that fail, he was to take along mediators, who could make aa unbiased appraisal of the situation and attempt a reconciliation; and should that fail, then the matter was to he taken to the church. Humility was the first step towards attaining a state of Grace; it would he ex emplified in the approach of the one sinned against to the one sin ning against him. Fertile ground; therefore, for the seeds of true forgiveness blossoming from a lov ing and concerned heart! For true forgiveness comss from the heart; it knows not the Rot. W. F. Vrirt f Church. while it cannot be denied that for giveness limited by the boundaries of remembrance of past hurts is a very human art, it must also be admitted that it is a very de structive thing. It hurts most the one who harbors it. True for giveness, on the other hand, ben efits the forgiving one, as well as the person forgiven. For he has taken one more faltering step to wards Sonship with God ? So what if it was not done too spontane ously, and without too much in ner conflict? God will not hold that against us. On the contrary, the gift that we thus give him will mean all the more in His eyes. And in our own humble way we will have grown into a little stronger, better person than we were before. Someone just a lit tle more worthy of the supreme sacrifice made on the Cross that we might be forgiven our sins and be considered worthy of a state of Grace.
