Various churches have their own Christmas treats, plays and other activities but there are three really beautiful and impressive events which should attract countywide interest and participation. The annual Christmas Cantata, held last Sunday evening in the Marshall Baptist Church is always one of the highlights. This year's presentation, "Love Transcending" was well attended and was highly successful and expertly rendered. The annual Candlelight Service at the Marshall Presbyterian Church will be held this Sunday evening at 7:30 o'clock In addition to the lighting of the candles, always a most impressive ceremony, the congregation will also participate in the singing of Christmas carols. The public is cordially invited. The third outstanding event, countywide, is the annual "live" Christmas Pageant depicting the events which preceded the birth of Christ, the Nativity, and the glory of His birth. This year's performances will be held on Dec. 19, 21 and 22 at 7:30 o'clock in front of the courthouse. For the eighth consecutive year, this nationally publicized Pageant is again expected to attract persons from many states. If you have seen this pageant you will want to see it again. If you have not seen it, be sure to make plans to do so t is year. Give Savings Bonds "This year, U. S. Savings Bonds make better-than-ever Christmas gifts", Bland W. Worley, North Carolina chairman for the Treasury's Savings Bonds Program, said today. "The interest rate is higher than ever, and the popular E Bond has a shorter-than-ever maturity period." The recently announced ' 2 percent bonus brings the effective rate of interest on Bonds bought today to 5' percent if held to maturity and E Bonds now mature in only 5 years, 10 months. There are other reasons for buying Savings Bonds as gifts, Mr. Worley pointed out. "You don't have to worry about style, size, shape, or color. And they're priced to fit almost any pocket book. They're indestructible if lost, stolen, mutilated, or destroyed, the Treasury will replace them free of charge. They're patriotic, too. "It's easy to buy Bonds. Your bank has them available in denominations ranging from $25 to $1000. And you now have a choice of four colorful and free gift envelopes. "While Savings Bonds are especially appropriate at Christmastime, they are ideal gifts for almost any occasion", Mr. Worley added. "For Birthdays, new babies, anniversaries, graduations, wed dingsyou name it Savings Bonds are the gift that keeps on giving." A FESTIVE CLIMATE South of the equator, chpistma is a Urn n A f? This week we will observe a time-honored event the advent of Christmas. It is a season of jollity and happiness, expressed in an outpouring of gifts to our loved ones, as " token of that love. But we must beware of succumbing to (let's face it) the com mercialism that has crept into the holiday over the years. For Christmas has an even deeper meaning to us as Christians. A great part of the happiness we feel at Christ mastide is derived from the greatest gift of all the birth of a Saviour, out of God's all encompassing love for mankind. Through this Bir thday we were given ab solution from our sins! Divine thought, Divine purpose, Divine manifestation these are the keynotes of the Christmas Season. For Christ is the Father, the Son, and the Holy "Ghost.. .the Holy Trinity. He always has been, and He always will be. He is the perfect Whole! The way to Christ's advent on earth had been well prepared by an able advocate. John the Baptist was a dedicated messenger, chosen by God to move His mighty plan for mankind towards fulfillment. But, despite John's inspired rhetoric, as history shows, the world was still not ready to accept without reservation the ad vent of" Christ. "He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came into His own, and His own received Him not." (John 1:10-11). Perhaps these are the saddest words in the Bible! But the Bible is a book of purpose. It is a book of hope. Among the many that scoffed, there were still a goodly number who listened with their hearts, who accepted this wonderful new doctrine and dedicated themselves to its perpetuation. And so, according to God's ancient promise, His Word did not return to Him empty, but accomplished that which was His purpose. This Christmastide we acknowledge and accept anew the gift of regeneration, for unto us, once again, a Child is given. If we fully accept Christ in our hearts, we have ab solute faith in complete Christian re-birth. Let us vow, as we approach the season of Christ's birthday, to renew ourselves in the wonder of His Being; for Christinas, if fully and deeply celebrated as a relfgious experience, is, in truth, an annual pilgrimage, from which we can gather strength and great spiritual sustenance, renewing our selves unto God, pledging ourselves more fully to His. service; . When the incarnation took place (the birth of the infant. Jesus) the babe was poorly received, for there was "no room at the fan". ; V' Let ut pause in the midst of Sometimes being a newspaper editor has its advantages.. ..many persons, perhaps, feel that a person who must face the turmoils of an editor deserves a few "fringe benefits". ..at any rate it paid off this past weekend when this writer was invited to be a guest at the Pittsburgh Steeler-Atlanta Falcons professional football game in Atlanta Stadium Sunday af ternoon....! really hated to miss the cantata at the Baptist church on Sunday night but I just couldn't refuse such an invitation to the game.. ..I left Marshall about 6 a.m., picked up Ed Spears, editor of the Just A Woman's Observations Are you reading the Khrush chev story in the LIFE magazine? I've read some of it and it sounds a little shallow, but I believe it is probably the way he now looks at what happened. I thought the picture of him on the cover for Dec. 4 looked like Frank Sinatra! Some people have sounded surprised at how the Communists do things, but if you've studied a little of how they operate, you know that what he says is how they do in their country. In other words, anyone who doesn't conform to what the head man says can be killed with no recourse by anyone. Went over to see Charlotte at Appalachian Saturday and as I approached Boone, I turned my radio to the WATA station and who brought the news but Muncie Milloway! I had noticed that Bobby Caldwell was doing the sports and the girl, Trudy, was giving the weather, but I just presumed it was a vacation for Muncie! Why doesn't someone keep me informed? The Asheville Bulldogs gave the Apps a fit and won the game in overtime. I saw Rickey and Glenda McDevitt there and I know he was happy for his team to win. When they won, I just reminded Charlotte that I was really from Cully' try a little KINDNESS If you and the neighbor'! dog are on good terms, offer to "pet ait" when his master goes away. our traditional merry -making and, surrounded by our loved ones, our lives bright with the merry laughter of children and grandchildren, make our own personal covenant with God; that Christ will not be turned away from our hearts tail Christmas. I passed through several towns over the weekend but didn't see any By DOROTHY BRIGMAN SHUPE and wasn't too heartbroken! She didn't know that UNC-A had beaten my crowd the week before! That McElhaney looked like he was about five feet tall, but he sure could steal the ball and dash down that court for an easy lay-up. Saw Wayne McDevitt and Walda Harrell yelling for UNC-A also. Of course, the highlight for me was when the Appalettes performed at halftime. Say, I fussed too quickly about not getting a party from my senior English class and the freshmen P. E. class. They really surprised me! I walked over to the gym Friday for class and those darling girls had planned me a party. Mrs. Gosnell had teamed up with Debbie Reed, Becky Rector, Ann Flynn, Shirley Flynn, Kathy Livesay, Rieta Sluder, Sandra Buckner, Linda Marler, Sandra Hensley, Elaine Rice the whole bunch fooled me completely! Then when I got back to my room, the seniors had put 61 candles on a cake for me and it looked about like the house was on fire when I went into my room! Reminded me of when Donna Mary Parris and Louise McDevitt Sprinkle and their crowd gave me a party many years ago. Johnny Dodson and Cecil Plemmons had stayed up late to make Extension Corner Pbon 649-2491 After the growing season is over we tend to forget about the poor performance of our crops last season. Moreover, we dont think about it again . until the crops become yellow, stunted or have abnormal growth next year and usually it's difficult to do anything about it once the problem develops. This can go on en dlessly unless we take a few minutes to take a soil sample and send it to the Soil Testing Laboratory. It's free, except for the -postage. Ask your county Extension peronnel for containers and instructions. What is pH? It's a scale used to measure the amount of hydrogen in the soil which in turn has a very significant effect on availability of essential plant nutrient and the form in which they are present.:. . Soils testing town with prettier Christmas street lights than we have here....as I played the organ at the funeral of Mrs. Myrtle Mashburn Gudger last Saturday afternoon I couldn't keep from thinking how many of our fine senior citizens have passed away during the past year Christmas is fast approaching and before you realize it, a new year will be here. ...how time does fly.. ..the large star above the Maco Wallin home is certainly beautiful, isn't it? many homes are beautifully decorated, too.... glad I'm not a judge at the annual judging of decorations around here.... two extra cakes and you should have heard how they ran their batter through a blender and then whipped it extra got to bed around 2:30 a.m., set their alarm wrong and was almost late for school! Calley although I feel that what he did was a very bad thing But we do send them over there to kill and seemingly he was so ordered Looking forward to the holidays Haven't started my cards yet will probably send them on Thursday before Christmas But I do hope all of my readers do have a very happy day then and before and after! 4-H below 7.0 are acid or "sour" and those testing above 7.0 are alkaline or "sweet". Most vegetable crops grow well in the range of pH 5.M.5 Never apply lime to a soil without a soil analysis. Ex cessive liming material can cause the pH to rise above 7.0 and make many of the essential elements unavailable for plant growth. This is especially true of sandy soil with low organic matter content. Are you calorie counting?
