Two styles of good old
mountain music came
together Sunday evening at
the McBurney Branch of the

One came from the Clinch
Mountains of Virginia, played
by Ralph Stanley and the
Clinch Mountain Boys. The
other was a product of the
Carolina Smoky Mountains as
played by the duo known as
White Light nin', Obray
Ramsey and Byard Ray.
Mr. Ramsey and Mr. Ray
are old-timers who readily
admit to more than 20 years of
playing together, although
their publicists are inclined
to boost the years toward 40.
With Mr. Ramsey on banjo
and Mr. Ray on fiddle, they
play a particularly lively style
of country music in which Mr.
Ramsey's bright banjo
picking and high, vibrant
voice play a major role,
supplemented by Mr. Ray's
broad fiddle strokes.
After decades as a
relatively obscure pair of folk
musicians, they have recently
gained a measure of renown
through playing in the film
"Zachariah," which put them
in contact with rock music. As
a result they were, on Sunday,
backed by a trio guitar,
electric bass and drums that
was less rock-oriented than
jazz-directed but, in any
event, not particulary in tune
with Mr. Ramsey and Mr.
Ray. It provided clumsy and
heavy-handed backing but,
despite this, Mr. Ramsey and
Mr. Ray got things going with
so much basic vitality that
they had the audience clap
ping and stomping along with
them.
Mr. Stanley and his three
associates, following a more
customary country music
path, offered a glib surface,
studded with backwoods show
biz mugging, that never got
down to any of the musical
reality that Mr. Ramsey and
Mr. Ray achieved despite
their sodden accompaniment.

County schools. Schedule is as

Programs in all the schools
will begin at 9 a.m. It is very
important that any child who
will be six years of age on or
before October 15, attend the
Beginners' Day in his school
district accompanied by a
parent.
Parents are reminded that
the North Carolina State Law
requires every child entering
any public school be im
munized against diphtheria,

child's immunization record

strongly urge that every child
entering school who has not
had the disease measles or the
measles immunization have
the immunization as soon as
possible. We also urge that
every child entering school
who has not had the disease

this protection as soon as

Horticulture Contest
Plans for the annual Western
North Carolina Horticultural
Crops Contest for 4-H Club and
Future Farmers of America
members .in the 18 western
counties have been announced
by Fritz McCall of East Flat
Rock, chairman of the Hor
ticultural Crops Commission of
the Asheville Agricultural
Development Council.
The contest, now in its 10th
year, is sponsored by the
commission jointly with the N.
C. Agricultural Extension
Service and Vocational
Agriculture teachers in the
area. Its purpose is to en
courage interest among rural
youth of the area in growing
horticultural croDS
Cash awards totaling $225 will
be presented to the winners
after judging next November.
First prize will be $100;
second, $50; third, $25; and five
honorable mention awards of
$10 each. Prize donors are The
Biltmore Estate, Gerber
Products Company, Pigeon
Valley Tomato Company,
Canton and 3-D Farm, Fletcher.
Eligible counties are Avery,
Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee,
Cherokee Reservation, Clay,
Graham, Haywood, Henderson,
Jackson, McDowell, Macon,
Madison, Mitchell, Polk,
Rutherford, Swain, Tran
sylvania and Yancey.
