All-County Basketball Team Mars Hill placed three boys and four girls on all-star selections in Madison County 'in-Jiic'.ba:: competition this season. The Mars Hill girls making the 10-player team were Bar bara English, Linda Robinson, Jean Wood and Wanda Griffin. Also chosen were Laurel's Cathy Bullman and Barbara Zimmerman, Marshall's Kathy Fisher, and Hot Springs' Terry Padgett, Pamela Price and Connie Greene. Chosen from the Mars Hill boys team were Seth Metcalf, Mike Robinson and Randy Ferguson. Selected from Mar shall were Ted Revis and Mike Freeman. Hot Springs placed Arthur Roberts, Junior Lamb, and David Whitten. Also picked were Roger Kenner of Spring Creek and Michael Johnson of Laurel. Master Mason Degrees To Be Conferred The French Broad Lodge, No. 282, will confer a Master Mason Degree, Saturday night, February 26. Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. by the ladies of the Eastern Star. All Master Masons are urged to attend. The meeting was postponed last Saturday night. In girls action Mars Hill roared to a 32-21 victory over Laurel to earn a berth in District 8 girl's tournament play by winning the tourney title. Jean Wood sparked the win with 11 points. Ann Hensley led Laurel with eight. The win was the 22nd straight for the Mars Hill girls. The boys game was close from start to finish with neither team holding more than a six point advantage. The Wildcats led at the half, 26-23. The Tor nadoes took the lead early in the third period only to have Mars Hill regain a four point edge. At the end of the stanza the teams were deadlocked, 38-38. Briggs put Marshall ahead for keeps with a field goal with 2:11 remaining to play. Mike Freeman led the win ners with 21 points. Two perfect records were held intact for the 1972 basketball season. The Laurel JV girls, coached by Harvey Franklin, were undefeated throughout the season and also during tour nament. THURSDAY NIGHT The Mars Hill varsity girls whipped Hot Springs, 39-20, the Hot Springs jayvee girls topped Teague New Officers Elected At French Broad EMC E. C. league of Marshall was elected as President of the Board of Directors of French Broad EMC at their meeting on February 14, 1971 Novile C. Hawkins of Mars Hill was elected vice president. Teague has' served on the Board for 38 years and had been serving as Vice President for 38 years. He is a native of Madison County and is owner and manager of Teague Milling Co, fan Marshall. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Citizens Bank and Marshall Housing Authority, as well as the Board of Trustees of Mara -Hill College. He and his wife, Marshall 23-19, and the Mar shall jayvee boys defeated Spring Creek, 46-37, in semifinal competition in the Madison County Tournament Thursday night. Michael Robinson paced five players in double figures with 17 points to lead the Mars Hill boys past Laurel, 83-57, as the Wildcats captured a semifinal contest Thursday night. Dennis and Marvin Shelton led Laurel's scoring with 11 points apiece. In the girls' semifinal contest Thursday, Mars Hill jumped to an 18-9 first quarter lead and never relinquished the ad vantage for the win. Barbara English netted 13 points to lead the victors while Terry Padgett sunk 13 points to spark the at tack for Hot Springs. FRIDAY NIGHT Hot Springs got double figure scoring from four starters Friday night as it won the Madison County Tourney boys consolation by downing Laurel, 70-67. Marshall won the girls consolation laurels with a 47-9 victory over Hot Springs. In the boys consolation game Hot Springs grabbed an early lead and beat down a late l-aurel surge to post its victory. Art Roberts led the victors with 18 points while Bob Padgett and Junior lunb had 14 apiece and J. V. FINALS Results of the championship JV games played Friday night: Girls: Laurel, 30: Hot Springs, 10. Boys: Marshall, 68; Hot Springs, 44. Hawkins Louise, are members of the Marshall Baptist Church where Teague serves as deacon. Hawkins is also a native of Madison County and is a retired retail businessman. He has served as Chairman of the County ASC Committee and has also served on the State ASC Committee. He is presently serving on the N. C Highway Commission represeattng Haywood, Madbon, Mitchell and Yancey Counties. He was elected to the Board of French Rmxi FMf! an October 25. 1871 to fill the unexpired term of W. S. French Broad Plan Another On February 17 the' North' Carolina Utilities Commission has granted Carolina Power and Light Company a 14.38 pa cent hike in their electrical rates which includes con tinuation of the 5.6 per cent interim increase the company has been charging since June. This rate increase will cost the average CP&L consumer an additional $3 per month. Jury Finds Cupp Guilty Of Assault The February term of superior court for the trial of criminal cases started here Monday morning with Judge Fred H. Hasty presiding. Practically the entire term thus far has been taken by the trial of Johnny Cupp, charged with assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill, in volving the shooting of Wayne McDevitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar McDevitt, of Marshall The incident occurred in February, 1871, in the parking lot area at Plemmons Restaurant on the Marshall by- Tntimonv was completed Tuesday and the Jury was given the case en Wednesday. The management of French Broad EMC regrets to inform the members that the electrical bills will be late due to dif Bruce Sams Dr. Bruce Sams, chairman of the Madison County Board of Commissioners, has withdrawn his candidacy for re-elcetion because of reasons of health. Sams, who had already Bled for re-election, withdrew his candidacy this week, he said, on "doctor's orders." He will, however continue to serve the balance of his term which ends this year. He asked for a meeting Friday night at Mars Hill with the Mars Hill area members of the county Democrat Executive Committee to discuss his reasons for not running again and to thank "the people who endorsed me two years ago." Madison commissioners are elected every two years. William T. Moore of Spring Creek and Ervin Adams of Laurel, incumbents, have already filed for re-election.
