Miss Russell Honored
Miss Nancy Russell of Winston-Salem,
formerly of Mars
Hill, was honored Tuesday
evening May 16, 1972, at the
Mars Hill Community Center
with a miscellaneous shower
given by the Ladies of The
Calvary Baptist Church.
Miss Russell is a registered
nurse and is the daughter of the
Rev. and Mrs. W. G. Russell of
Asheville, formerly of Mars
Hill. Russell was pastor of the
Calvary Baptist Church until
his retirement.
She is the bride-elect of John
Whaley of Winston-Salem.

Miss Margaret Collins Becomes
Bride Of Wallace R. Ponder
Miss Margaret Collins and
Wallace Rust in Pander, both of
Route 2, Marshall, were
married Saturday, May 20, 1972
at 7:30 p.m. in the Marshall
Baptist Church. The Rev. Glenn
Whitley, pastor, conducted the
double ring ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Troy R. Collins;
and the bridegroom is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Zeno Ponder, all
of Route 2, Marshall.
The church was decorated
with greenery, fern, baskets of
yellow gladioli large yellow
mums, yellow and white poms
and candlabra holding lighted
yellow tapers.
A program of wedding music
was presented by Charles Huey,
organist. Mr Huey played
"Choral, Suite Gothique",
Boellmann; "Psalm XX",
Marcello; "Sanctus", Faure;
"Truth Abideth from 'Xerxes'",
Handel; "The Promises,"
Panchenko; "Thy Love Enfold
Us," Chase, "Andante

traditional wedding marches
were used for the processional
and recessional.
Given in marriage by her
father, the bride wore a floor
length gown of bridal satin with
MARS HILL COLLEGE commencement weekend
was busy for the Sams Family. Emmett S. Sams,
mathematics professor, was honored Saturday night
for completing 25 years of service on the faculty;
and his two daughters, Paula a sophomore, (left)
and Rebecca a senior, (right) began duty as college
marshal Sunday ushering participants in bac
calaureate and commencement exercises. The two
women were named marshalls recently in
recognition of their academic standing. Sams, a
native of Burnsville, graduated from Mars Hill when
it was a junior college and holds degrees from
Western Carolina University and Peabody College.

torian neckline. The skirt was
accented with ruffles of her
lace. Her mantilla of matching
lace extended into a chapel
train, and she carried a bouquet
of white and yellow roses.
Miss Nancy Collins, sister of
the bride, was maid of honor.
She wore an Empire gown of
yellow taffeta with lace overlay
and a matching headpiece. She
carried a long-stemmed yellow
rose.
Miss Faye McGhee of
Asheville, aunt of the bride; and
Miss Nancy Gentry of Marshall
were bridesmaids. Delina
Langford of Asheville, cousin of
the bride, was flower girl. They
were dressed in green taffeta
gowns, fashioned like that of the
honor attendant.
David Allen of Marshall was
best man. Ushers were Troy R.
Collins, Jr., brother of the
bride; and Ralph Ponder,
brother of the bridegroom.
Stephen Ponder, cousin of the
bridegroom, was ringbearer.
The mother of the bride wore
a dress of blue and the
bridegroom's mother wore
pink. Each wore a corsage of
white carnations.

A reception was held in the
fellowship hall of the church
following the ceremony. The
bride's table was covered with a
white linen cloth and a color
scheme of yellow and white was
carried out. Mrs. Jack O.
Barrett, aunt of the bride, cut
the three-tiered wedding cake.
She was assisted in serving by
Miss Emagene Ponder, sister of
the bridegroom; Mrs. Herbert
Ponder, sister-in-law of the
bridegroom, and Miss Delores
Bradley.
The bride is a graduate of
North Buncombe High School
and was employed by Southern
Bell Telephone and Telegraph
Co.
The bridegroom is a graduate
of Marshall High School and is
attending N. C. State Univer
sity, Raleigh, where he is
majoring in nuclear
engineering.
Mrs. David Trull of Candler
directed the wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. Ponder will live
at Lake Boone Trail in Raleigh.

Dendy. The bride is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
William Douglas Hickey of Pine
Burr Park, Asheville, and the
granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Cutshall of Marshall,
Route 4. The bridegroom is the
son of Mrs. Wade Blankenship
and the late Wade Blankenship
of Weaverville.
Given in marriage by her
father, the bride wore a full
length gown of bridal satin
overlaid with polyester illusion
trimmed in lace and pearls. Her
chapel-length train was of satin
and illusion and trimmed in
lace. Her mantilla was attached
to a flat bow of satin and per a Is.
Her gown and veil was designed
and made by her mother. She
carried yellow roses and white
stephonias.

She wore a turquoise Empire
gown and overskirt of darker
chiffon and carried daisies and

department there for three

ferred to Mars Hill College
where she received her
Bachelor of Music degress in
piano this year. She recently
received a full assistantship to
Converse College Graduate
School of Music in Spartanburg,
S. C, where she will continue
her studies for a master's
degree in piano
Thebridegroom is a graduate
of North Buncombe High School
and has served with the Marine
Corp in Vietnam. After his
military service he attended the
University of North Carolina in
Asheville. At present he is
employed by Philips Fibers in
Spartanburg, S. C.
The couple will live at 1265-A
Asheville Highway, Spar
tanburg, while the bride is
studying at Converse College
Graduate School of Music.
