MARSHALL, N.C. . Should Funerals Be Pre-Arranged? Talking about death is often difficult. Yet a death in the family often creates problems for the survivors. Is advance planning for the funeral an answer to such problems? "Sometimes," says Albert S. Lineberry, President of the North Carolina Funeral Directors Association. "But the advantages and disad vantages for advance plan ning depends upon individual circumstances. What may be in the best interest for some may be impractical for One Second 9 Billion Parts Things You Didn't Know About Time How many times have you glanced at ynur watch to day? If you're typical of moiit people you probably look at your watch at least a dozen times a day We live by tlie clock. But, what is time? It may surprise you to learn our chief clock is the Earth itself as it moves some 66,600 miles per hour in orbit a round the Sun. So that when we measure time, we are. in fact, measuring the periodic motion of the Earth Since 1964, however, scien tists have not considered the Earth completely accurate. The "year" equivalent to one complete Earth orhit a round the Sun -is "off." thev reported, up to 3 seconds Thev pointed out that the Earth's vear is the equiva lent to '31,556.925.9747 sec onds, plus or minus 3 seconds' Scientists spotted the error by using new clocks that per mitted them to develop a new definition for the second: 9,192.631,770 "periods of radi ation" of the atom of cesium 133. The pulsating atom of cesium 133 is now the basis of the world's most accurate atomic clocks It would take a cesium 133 atomic clock 100,000 years to lose more than 5 seconds In contrast, experts report that conventional watches are "accurate" to within 30 sec onds a day. But in 1961 Bu lova introduced the first elec tronic watch-the Accutron which is accurate to within 60 seconds a month. The watch utilizes a tun ing fork in place of the usual "balance wheel". As with the cesium 133 atom, the tuning fork vibrates at a precise rate (360 times n second) which account for the timepiece's extraordinary accuracy. The latest development is a miniature version of the watch aptly called mini Ac cutron, designed for women. It's interesting to note that while the tuning fork on the large model vibrates 360 times a second, the one in the smaller version vibrates 480 times Researchers say the higher frequency compen sates for the small size of the fork and permits the same degTee of accuracy. Earlier devices to measure time included the pocket sun dial (which was useful only in good weather), the famil iar hourglass (if you remem bered to reverse it fre quently), and the water clock, which measured the length of time it took for water to flow from one container to another (as long as it didn't freeze) . Old Anglo-Saxons used a ma rked candle - the distance it took for the flame to burn down from one marking to another - to measure time r Eyes Examined Glasses Fitted - by - DR. LOCKARD A. Advance planning for the funeral is now, however, considered by many for varied reasons. Persons without children or close relatives, for example, often want to assure themselves of an adequate funeral. Retired persons sometimes desire to make arrangements that their bodies be returned to their hometowns at death. "The pre-need arrangement does provide a person with the opportunity to indicate his wishes in writing," points out So, ii you want the time of day, you might try using a pocket sundial, an hourglass, a water clock, a candle or better still, a miniature tuning-fork watch. "It also enables one to review and evaluate current funeral costs, funeral ceremonies, and burial procedures." And counseling with' a funeral director may well be both an educational and positive experience, he feels. "Aside from the specific reasons for discussing ad vance funeral arrangements, it brings the subject of death out into the open and. affords the family an opportunity to share their thoughts," he explains. . Lineberry also feels that it is always wise to consult those who will be affected by the death. "It is important to remember that while the funeral is of the person who has died," he comments, "it is actually for those who sur vive. Those survivors whose feelings will actually for those who survive. Those survivors whose will be must affected by the death should be consulted before prescribing a definite kind of funeral. Permitting them to assist in advance planning of the funeral and interment serves as a healthy outlet for their grief." Information for pre planning the funeral is now available in a new pamphlet, "Advance Planning for the Funeral," recently developed by the North Carolina Funeral Directors Association as a public service.
