The word "defeat" can in no way be applicable to the life of Christ on this earth. For, confronted with the awful reality of the cross, He nevertheless triumphed over death, and arose again on the third day! Rejected, falsely accused, unjustly condemned, Christ was never defeated! Mankind, however, presents another, story! For mankind Jew and Gentile alike was responsible for the greatest sin ever perpetrated by human beings! How many of us, today, have a right moral and-or spiritual to condemn Pontius Pilate for his weakness in the face of threats and opposition? Do we not many of us today, commit ourselves to the expedient following the path of surrender simply because the path indicated by principle is too demanding a path to follow? Surely we must find, in our souls, a pity for this man, divided between what was right and the ultimate (and ever present) power of Caesar? Throughout Christ's life He was confronted with op position and villification. He was persecuted, questioned, and exposed to ridicule by non-believers, by enemies of the truth; but He persisted in His cause the rehabilitation of mankind in relation to God. Even to the advent of the cross! He was committed to the service of the Heavenly Father, to the saving of mankind. NOTHING could deter Him not even the temptings of the devil in Gethsemane; not even the appearance of personal defeat in the eyes of those He came upon earth to convert to the Christian faith! Christ never lost sight of His goal; and as we, His servants, struggle through the temp tations and trials which beset all human lives, we must be inspired by His example. If we are to perpetrate the ultimate in human endeavors in His service, we must not be turned away from our objective. We must exhibit the tame determination and dedication as did He! Christ, confronted by Pilate, did not bargain, or beg. He gladly accepted Hit fate, knowning that mankind would benefit by His suffering.. .no matter how painful that suffering would be! By His spirit, Christ sublimated the outward ap pearances of defeat; by His spirit His all-encompassing love and concern for mankind He emerged victorious over death, over humiliations! But all that lay in the future; Be still had to endure taunts and temptings, questions and doubts, until He was vin dicated in the eyes of the world. How many of us could triumph over disaster, over seeming vanquishment, as He did? How many of as would have the courage to commend our souls, and ear purpose, into the hands of God, as He did? How many of us would' as did Pilata surrender In the fact of overwhelming odds? It ta perhaps good that we should ponder apoa these things!
