Robert N. Cleveland, executive vice president and general manager of N. C. Electric Membership Cor poration, said the 28 electric cooperatives in North Carolina "have a total in vestment in the state of 1250 million and employ 1,500 people. Cleveland was the featured speaker at the 1974 Annual Meeting of French Broad Electric Membership Cor poration, headquartered here. The EMC serves more than 16.UUU consumer-members in Madison, Buncombe, Yancey, Mitchell and Unicoi (Ten nessee) counties. The speaker told the capacity crowd in the gym nasium that electricity ac counts for about 25 percent of all energy in the country at present, but is expected to rise to 50 percent by the year 2,000. In discussing the various forms of raw energy available for conversion to electric power, Cleveland pointed out that coal is one of the most important sources of energy for electricity in the U. S., with untapped supply sufficient to meet the nation's needs for 300 or 400 years. "Unfortunately, a lot of the coal is not where the population is, but is out in Colorado and Wyoming, and the greatest need for elec tricity is on the east and west coasts. We can build generating plans, but we have to build a national grid system for this country to move electricity from one place to another and this is going to take five or six years to develop." Cleveland said the federal ISHCf from Mtrrs Hill College. He plans to move to Mur- phy. N. C. at the end of May where he will assist in farming chores with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Myers. Currently, he added, 15 major oil companies own 55 percent of the coal reserves and 70 percent of known privately owned uranium reserves. "This means that all of the known energy in this country is controlled by these 15 companies." The N. C. EMC official called for the cooperatives and their consumer-members to join together to make their voices heard in the govern mental circles of Washington and Raleigh. "Let your Congressman and TOrT" legislators know how you feel," he said. "And, if they don't listen, tell them again at the ballot box. That's the language politicians un derstand." DIRECTORS REELECTED At the business session various reports were given and the directors were reelected. The board is composed of E. C. Teague, president; Novile Hawkins, vice-president; C. L. Proffitt, secretary; W. G. Plemmons, treasurer; C. E. Buchanan, I. E. Clevenger, Paul Higgins, E. H. Poteat, J. A. Rice, Albert Freeman, Jr., and O. H. Tilson. John A.
