before the liability status of a
school board member can be
clearly defined.
As soon as the legal im
plications of this decision can
lie evaluated, the General
Assembly will have to try to
clarify the libaility status of a
board member.
And all this came about
because two girls were
suspended from school for
louring two bottles of beer in
the punch at a school party.
The educational establish
ment was further jolted last
week when the legislature's
Fiscal Research staff, after
making a study of the
Department of Public In
struction, recommended that
the State Hoard of Education
be abolished and that the State
Superintendent be appointed
by the Governor rather than
elected.
Tliese two proposals are not
apt to draw much sunoort.

On .January 27, Dr. Evelyn
Underwood, of Mars Hill, met
with the Student Government
and History Club officers of
Madison High School where
she discussed the organizing
of a Bicentennial Committee
of Madison high school
students. Mr. Harrison,
lustory club sponsor, was also
present and tentative plans
were made.
The History Club held its
first meeting and ratified its
constitution and elected the
