He had been in failing health for a year. Born in Madison County on March 7, 1899, a son of the late George Roberson and Hattie Jarrett Roberson, he was a retired fanner and a veteran of the Navy. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in TaylorsvUle by the Rev. Robert Boggs. Burial was in TaylorsvUle City Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Julia Mae Worley Roberson; two sons, John L. Roberson of Asheboro and Paul Roberson of Boone; a brother, George Roberson of Marshall; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Sprinkle of Marshall and Mrs. Mildred Warren of AshevUle; and five grandchildren. HORACE A. CHANDLER Horace Arthur Chandler, 74, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Mars Hill and AshevUle, died unexpectedly Wed nesday, April 16, 1975 in Jacksonville of an apparent heart attack. A native of Madison County, he had lived in Jacksonville for 10 years. He was a former restaurant owner and a son of the late M. S. and Lula Briggs Chandler. He was the husband of the late Mabel Edwards Chandler. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Annette Winter of Jacksonville; two sons, Ar thur Chandler of WeavervUle and Jimmy Chandler of Greensboro; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Belle Eatmon of Mars HiU, Mrs. I da Briggs of WeavervUle and Mrs. Stella Huntsinger of AshevUle; a brother, Charles Chandler of Michigan; eight grand children and three great grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Capps Funeral Home. The Rev. BUly Cline officiated. Burial was in Mars Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roy and G. E. Briggs, Clarence and Jerry Young, Boyd Eatmon and S. L. Nix. GROVER C. CARVER Grover Cleveland Carver,86, of Rt. 3, Hot Springs, died Friday April 18, 1975 in a Western North Crolina hospital after an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Madison County, he was a retired merchant and fur niture worker. He was a son of the late Hicks and Timey WadeU Carver. Surviving are a son, Roy Carver of Asheville; a daughter, Mrs. Neal Goode of Hot Springs; three grand children and four great grandchUdren. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Fairview United Methodist Church. The Rev. Baxter Proffitt of ficiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. A lifelong resident of Madison County, he was a ret'red maintenance employe of the Madison County Board of Education. He was son of the late James and Melvinia Sams Ramsey. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Pearl Norton Ramsey; three daughters, Mrs. Queen Plemmons and Mrs. Pearl Reece of Marshall and Mrs. Landon Deal of Brevard; a son, Ross Hal Ramsey of Marshall; a brother, Frank Ramsey of Marshall; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walnut Free Will Baptist Church. The Revs. Warren Reece, Jimmy Buckner and Gerald Sprinkle officiated. Burial was in Bowman-Rector Cemetery. Pallbearers were Clyde Roberts, Mitchell Reece, Charles Craine, Bill Obrey and Earl Ramsey. Bowman Funeral Home was in charge. FLOYD DAVIS SR. Floyd Davis Sr., 69, of Marshall, died Saturday April 19, 1975 in an Asheville hospital after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Madison County and son of the late Tom and Dora Davis. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. I-avada Revis Davis; a son, Floyd Davis Jr. of Marshall; two step-daughters, Mrs. Pauline Cribb of Durham and Mrs. Helen Barnes of Ieicester; a stepson, Billy Revis of River Rouge, Mich.; three sisters, Mrs. Ervin Hensley, Mrs. Jess Church and Mrs. Inez Haynie of Marshall; two barothers, Major and Robert Davis of Marshall; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Bowman Funeral Home. The Revs. Coleman CaldweU and Ray Roberts officiated. Burial was in Bowman - Rector Cemetery. Friends were pallbearers. . . WNCHA Met At Haywood Tech; Cornwell Cited The Western North Carolina Historical Association met at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19 at Haywood Technical Institute. Miss Mary Cornwell, home economics extension agent for Haywood County and an authority in the field, spoke on the mountain craft's industry. The recipient of the association's Achievement Award was announced by Joe L. Morgan, chairman of the WNCHA. It honors distinguished service in any cultural area, or general service to the mountain section. Morgan presented this year's Achievement Award Award to Miss Corn well, who organized the N. C. State Fair Craft Division in 1951 and who has served as director each year since that time. Miss Cornwell has received fourteen citations and awards for her work in crafts on the county, state and national levels. Mrs. Frances McDowell, chairman of the Heritage Center Committee, reports remarkable progress on the Smith - McDoweU House in AshevUle. It is being con verted into a regional heritage center through the efforts of numerous individuals and historical and cultural groups in tw .lty-three counties in WNC. Wolf Laurel Golf Course Opens May "2 The management of Bald Mountain Development Corporation recently an nounced that the Wolf Laurel Golf Course (the highest course East of the Rockies) will be opening to the public again this year; the first opening day of the 1975 season being May 2nd. Improvements have continued at Wolf Laurel including the enlarging of the existing Pro Shop. One of the greatest steps forward for the golfers of this area has been the hiring of a Professional Golf Manager. It was recently announced that Rod Carter - a Class A member of the PGA assumed his duties at Wolf Laurel on April 1st. Rod was born in a small town named El Dorado, IU. in 1947. He moved to Fort Myers, Fla., with his family at the age of 10. He went to school at Fort Myers High School. After graduating from high school he received a baseball scholarship to Edison Junior College. It was there that he got his start in golf. French graduating from Edison in 1967, he decided not to pursue further schooling and to turn to golf. He became Involved in the Professional Golf Association apprentice program in 1967 at the young age of 19 and was given his first start in golf at the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla. where he stayed for four seasons as an Assistant Professional under the weU known Long Island Professional, Tom Nieparte. During this time Rod finished his apprenticeship in the Professional Golf Association and became one of the youngest ever to receive a Class A membership. He participated in many state tournaments during this time, thur gaining much needed tournament experience. From there Rod played on the Far East Tour from February 1972 until April 1972 and also on the Florida Winter Tour. Par ticipants had to be accepted by the Professional Golf Association to play in the Far East Tour; 29 players from the United States began the TRUCKS $ $ $ $ Broad CI; Ttaartday, April Z4, tour and 13 finished, Including Rod. After touring nine dif ferent countries, Rod returned from the Far East Tour to become the head Golf Professional at the Dodger town Golf Club in Vero Beach, Fla. where he has spent the last three seasons.
