Madison Anally got the bonus freethrow with just over four minutes in the period, but they were unable to hit any of them. If the Patriota had hit half their foul shots they would have had a good lead at halftime, but they trailed S7-M instead. Mitchell simply ran Madison off the floor in the third period. The Patriot's shooting was ice coid all quarter The typical pfcy ? the q-rtar was grabbing the rebotmd and fast breaking down court far a Tha^ Mwadalnears points with a ?Mi load at the ^ waf^eHme etory In the coukfc't get'backoo defense in time to prevent a Mitchell faat en to build a 1*-point winning margin. Madison was dealt a crushing blow in the second quarter when Peggy Rice picked up her third foul with 4:B to go. The Patriots rebounding was soeo up to then, but it was worse after that, Heritage's defense held Madison to a mere seven points in the quarter and claimeda SO-11 leadat the half. The Patriots opened the flood gates in the third quarter. The Cougars' defense had effectively stopped Madison's inside game in die first half so the girls let go from outside. Madison shot the ball like it was a hot potato, but instead of jetting closer they got farther Mhind. Heritage led M-H after three periods of play. Therefore, co champions were declared in the Women's League even though the North Carolina Farm Bureau Team was undefeated and had beaten the second place team, Blue Ridge Shoe, and in the East Division of the Men's League where the Hasbeens were 8-1 and had beaten Chandler's Gulf (7-1) in their only meeting. Burger Doodle (8-1) was clearly the champion of the Men's West Division. The leagues had excellent years with good officiating by Mars Hill College students, directed by Charlie Phillips, a faculty member at Mars Hill College. Appreciation, is ex pressed to the officials, the Madison County School Board, the Madison County Com missioner, the sponsors, the players, and the fans for theii contribution to the success oi the program. Particular thanks go to Ricky McDevitt, director of the Madison County Recreation League, for the fine way in which he (greeted the league this year. Regular Seasea Records N.C.
