Advisory Committee Meets The Madison County Advisory Committee of the WNC Council on Aging met Dec. 12 at the HUD Building here. Raymond Rapp of Mars Hill College was the guest speaker who discussed the continuing education program for persons over 55 years of age. Members of the committee attending were Mrs. Oletta Shelton, Mrs. Lucille English, Mrs. Annie Fox, Miss Teresa Zimmerman and Mrs. Lucille Burnette. Mrs. Joan Tuttle of Asheville wu also present, and Mrs Roy Young was the new member of the committee present The next meeting will be held Jan. ? at 1 p.m. in the HUD Building here. Haggins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Haggins of Box 28A, Hot Springs, recently visited Athens, Greece. He is serving as a crewmember aboard the frigate USS Thomas C. Hart, homeported in Norfolk, Va. His ship currently is operating as a unit of the U. S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. During the 11-day port visit, he and his shipmates had the opportunity to tour the capital and largest city of Greece, plus visit the Acropolis, Archaeological Museum and Agora of Athens. Additionally, his ship responded to a distress call on Dec. 4 and rescued 21 crewmembers from a Greek ship that was in danger of breaking up in the Aegean Sea. The ship dispatched its embarked helicopter which, along with a U. S. Army helicopter, rescued the Greek seamen. During the remainder of the cruise, his ship will par ticipate in various training exercises with other Sixth Fleet units and with ships of allied nations. Additionally, port visits are scheduled in several Mediterranean coastal cities. His ship is a 438-foot long "Knox" class frigate with a crew of 283 officers and enlisted men. Equipped with guns, missiles and rockets, she can operate independently or as part of a naval task force. Additionally, she is outfitted with a landing platform and normally carries a light helicopter for long range detection and attack of submarines.
