Madison County Deaths J. Marvin Glance ?????? J. MARVIN OLANCK John Marvin Glance, 76, of Route I, Leicester, retired Aaheville attorney, died May 25 in an Aaheville hospital after a short illness. The N.C. Bar Association in 1977 cited his service with a 50 year certificate. A past president of the Buncombe County Bar Association, he served on the county Board of Elections and was active in Republican politics. Glance was educated at Western Carolina College and Wake Forest Law School. He was a native of Madison County and was a resident of Buncombe County for the past 75 years. A son of the late Jesse Merrimon and Lucinda Brown Glance, he was the husband of the late Paron Meadows Glance, who died in 1974. Glance was vice president of Anders-Rice Mutual Burial Association. He was a member and former officer of the N.C. Travelers Protective Association and was a member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. He was an active member of Bell United Methodist Church for 57 years, where he had served as Sunday school superintendent, teacher of the adult Sunday school class, lay leader, past chairmanof the Board of Stewards and chairman of evangelism. Surviving are a daughter, Laura Louise Glance of the home; a son. Bill Dow Glance of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mary Harris of Fairview and Rubye Black of Leicester; two brothers, Clinton C. Glance of Candler and Gilmer H. Glance of Asheville; and three grandsons. Services were held at I p.m. Saturday in Bell United Methodist Church in Leicester. The Rev. Enoch Ball Jr. officiated. Burial was in Bell United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Payne Ullie McDevitt Payne, 83, of Route 6, Marshall, died May 34 in an Asheville hospital following a long illness. A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Asbury and Martha Jane Davis McDevitt. She was a member of Union Valley Baptist Church. Surviving are four sons, Boyd, James and Edward Payne of Marshall and Earl Payne of Knoxville, Tenn.; three daughters, Lola Gosnell of Asheville, Evelyn Gosnell of Dayton, Ohio, and Dorothy Wilds of Marshall, with whom ahe?made her home; three sisters, Lora Norton of Marshall and Naomi Norton and Carrie McDevitt of Asheville; 42 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Upper Walnut Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Jay Griffin, the Rev. Jack Jones and the Rev. Ralph Bowman officiated. Burial was in Cove Creek Cemetery in Greeneville, Tenn. Mrs. Caldwell Bonnie Plemmons Caldwell, 63, of 401 Camp Branch Road, Waynesville, died May 24 in Haywood County Hospital after a long illness. A native of Madison County, she was a retired sales clerk and was a daughter of the late A.E. and Maude Woody Plemmons. Surviving are her husband, Elwood Caldwell; two daughters, Mrs. Troy Hargrove and Mrs. W.R. Hardin of Canton; three brothers, Everette Plemmons of Old Fort, Leonard Plem mons of Aberdeen, Wash., and Garland Plemmons of Clyde; two sisters, Gertrude Burgess of Waynesville tfnd Mrs. Herman Higgins of Soddy, Tenn.; and five grand children. Services were held at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Allen's Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Carl Presnell, the Rev. Ricky Mason and the Rev. C.A. Phaup officiated. Burial was in Green Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Conner Inez D. Conner, 75, of Old Airport Road, Fletcher, died May 25 after a long illness. A native of Madison County, she had lived in Henderson County for the past 15 years. She was a member of Skyland Baptist Church, where she was a member of the adult ladies Sunday school class. She was a daughter of the late Levi and Margaret Lusk Davis and the wife of Fred Conner, who died in 1988. She is survived by a daughter, Ina Margaret Penoyer of Greenville, S.C.; four sons, William Glenn Conner of Fletcher, Roy Jennings Conner of Alexan der, Floyd Ben Conner of Skyland and Bernie Ray Conner of Berwyn Heights, Md.; two sisters, Maude Waldroup and Carmen Brown of Hot Springs; a brother, Jennings Davis of Marion; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in Skyland Baptist Church. The Rev. D.K. Brevard and the Rev. Joe Sprinkle officiated. Burial was in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Bluff. James Massey James Edward Massey, 29, of Macclenny, Fla., died unexpectedly May 20 in Macclenny. A native of Madison County and a resident of Macclenny for five years, he was a truck driver for Dart Transit Lines of St. Paul, Minn. Roy Sprinkle Roy Sprinkle, 62, of 112 North Belvedere Ave., Gastonia, died Saturday in a Charlotte hospital following a period of declining health. A native of Madison County and a resident of Gastonia for the past three years, he was a retired heavy equipment operator and was a son of the late Zade and Carrie Sams Sprinkle. He is survived by two brothers, Jobie R. Sprinkle of Marshall and Gay Sprinkle of Madison, Wise.; and a sister, Hazel Sprinkle of Gastonia; a niece and a nephew. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Capps Funeral Home. The Rev. Stanley Peek officiated. Burial was in Mars Hill Cemetery. James Moss James Walter Moss, 76, of Route 1, Mars Hill, died Monday at his home following an extended illness. A native of Buncombe County and a resident of Madison County for the past 50 years, he was a son of the late James and Lillie Anderson Moss. He was a retired em ployee of the N.C. State High way Commission. Surviving are his wife, Bertha Jarvis Moss; two sons, Robert "Bobby" and J.C. Moss of Mars Hill; two granddaughters and a great grandson and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Ivy Chapel Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Howard Ogle and the Rev. Joe Honeycutt officiated. Burial was in George Cemetery. Capps Funeral Home was in charge. W.E. VanDervort William Ellsworth VanDervort of 2200 Wooded Acres, Waco, Texas, died May 10 in a Waco hospital. Graveside services wre held on May 12 with entombment at Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum. Reader Dale Kenipp officiated. Mr. VanDervort was born and reared in North Carolina. He worked in retail mer chandising for 35 years. He was well known in Madison County where he and Mrs. VanDervort have spent their summers for many years. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Beulah VanDervort, and a sister, Mrs. E.M. Stackhouse of Charlotte. Clyde Ball Ira Clyde Ball, 66, of Route 1, Marshall, (Ammons Branch), died of a heart at tack Monday afternoon at his home. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 at the Madison Seminary Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Kimsey Ball and the Rev. Gerald Sprinkle officiated and burial was in the Bull Creek Cemetery. Neighbors were pallbearers. Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Alpha Kent Ball; two brothers, Coble and Claude, both of Marshall; two sisters, Mrs. Nannie Hunter and Mrs. Ella Rice, both of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews. Ball was a retired farmer, the son of the late Melvin and Maggie Waldroup Ball. Bowman Funeral Home was in charge. Homecoming Homecoming will be ob served this Sunday at the Piney Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. K.J. Jenkins will deliver the morning message at 11, and dinner will be served following the service.
