Workshop To Focus On Freshman's Needs "Focus on the Freshman i Year," a three-day workshop i at Mars Hill College, June 25- ] 27, will be directed to college i and secondary school ad- | ministrators and faculty i working with college fresh- i men or with high school i students preparing for < college. I The workshop is the i culmination of an idea con- i ceived by English instructor i Kay Gregory following several visits to other i colleges. "When I visited other schools for conferences and workshops, I specifically asked what kind of support programs were available to freshmen," she noted. "Most schools had at least one program that was very good, some had two or three, but none had the kind of com prehensive program Mars Hill does." When the Baptist-related college initiated its com petence-based curriculum several years ago, the fresh man year had evolved as a critical time for the new student. In order to help fresh men adapt to college life, Mars Hill developed a series of support programs, in eluding an orientation to the college for students and their parents; personalized ad vising through a mentor program which involves both upperclassmen and faculty members; academic support in the resident halls by a core )f resident assistants; and a fiighly individualized development program ad ministered by math, reading, and writing laboratories. Students in the 18 to 21 year age bracket are finding there are other opportunities open to them besides college. As a result, competition in student recruitment has become fierce. Interest in freshmen students has intensified as colleges realize the value of retaining current students through four years. Mrs. Gregory, an alumna of Mars Hill and director of the writing skills laboratory, notes that the workshop has so far attracted 76 participants from 19 states representing 38 colleges. Public school teachers who attend may count the workshop as credit for recertification. Additional information may be obtained by writing Mrs. Gregory in care of Mars Hill College, Mars Hill 28754.
