People living on upper floors used to throw their dirty water and garbage into the street. Since the man was on the outside, the trash would hit him, not the lady who was close to the building. Also, men were to protect women from horses on the streets and roads. The custom of shaking hands started when a-knight would put his sword in his left hand and put out his right hand to signal he did not want to fignt. Buttons on men's coats were first put there to stop soldiers from wiping their noses on tne cuffs. n ----- -.1 Tim ? : " '
