Miss Sharpe Ethel Rebecca Sharpe, 83, of Asheville died Aug. M at her home after an extended illness. A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late William P. and Isabele Anderson Sharpe. A graduate of Smith College in Winston Salem, she was a former director for the state hospital in Columbia, S.C. She was a member of Try on Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. L.D. Murphy of Coral Gables, Fla.; and a brother, Edward Sharpe of Bakersville. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 24 in Polk Memorial Gardens. The Rev. John D. Smith officiated. McFarland Funeral Chapel was in charge. W.M. Worley Woodall Moore Worley, 78, of Rout* 6, Marshall, died at home on Aug. 18 after an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Madison County, he was a retired fanner. He was a son of the late Canada and Lethia Roberts Worley. Surviving are his wife, Gemmie Payne Worley; a daughter, Elva Barrett of Leicester; three brothers, Andrew Worley of' Brevard, Claude Worley of Sevierville, Tenn., and Vestal Worley of Marshall; two sisters, Madne Fortner of Pauls Crossroads, Tenn., and Nellie Lane of Alexandria, Va.; eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 21 in Lower Big Pine Baptist Church of which he was a member and deacon. The Rev. Danny Little and the Rev. Clifford Cable officiated. Burial was in Alor-Worley Cemetery. Bowman Funeral Home was in charge. EJZ. Reeves Elbert Zack Reeves, 71, of Route 2, Leicester, died Aug. 22 in an Asheville hospital after a brief illness. A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Elbert and Ella Harbin Reeves. Surviving are the widow, Mary Carver Reeves; two brothers, Lease and Mallie Reeves of Leicester; two sisters, Carrie Reeves of Leicester and Mrs. D.H. Church, of Hot Springs; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held last Friday at the Little Sandy Mush Methodist Chruch. The Rev. Tom Weeks officiated. McCLAIN Mrs. McClain Iris McLean McClain, 63, of 70 West Oakview Road, died Monday in an Ashevilie hospital after a long illness. A native of Madison County and a resident of Buncombe County for 40 years, she was a daughter of the late Levi and Pearl Ray McLean. She was a member of Enka Baptist Church and was a former member and Sunday school teacher at West Ashevilie Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Charles A, McClain; a daughter, Katheryn Proffitt of Clover, S.C.; a son, Henry Mc Clain of Ashevilie; a sister, Julia Martha Young of Mars Hill; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 29 in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Rev. Dale Fisher and the Rev. Nane Starnes officiated. Burial was in Green Hills Cemetery. Mrs. Caldwell Alma Davis Caldwell, 54, of Newfound Road, Leicester died Aug. X in an Asheville hospital after an extended illness. A native of Madison County, and a resident of the Leicester area for the past 30 years, she was a daughter of the late George M. and Minnie Fortner Davis. She was a member of North Fork Baptist Church. Surviving are the husband, Kennie R. Caldwell; two sons, Robert Caldwell of Gaffney, S.C. and Keith Caldwell of the home; six daughters, Geraldine Gryder of Mauldin, S.C., Donna King and Shirley King of Asheville, Kathy Steelman of Savannah, Ga., Patsy Rogers of Leicester and Diana Caldwell of the home; a brother, Larry Davis of Hot Springs; a sister, G retch en Strickland of Old Fort and 11 grandchildren. Burial was in North Fork Cemetery, Madison County. Mrs. Prince Mrs. Violet Russell Prince, 74, wife of Charles T. Prince of Union, S.C., died Aug. 26 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness. A native of Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Earl Anderson and Matilda Norris Russell and a member of Wesleyan Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Martha Gault of Union ; a son, William B. Prince of Buf falo, S.C.; a brother, Furman Russell of Laurens, S.C.; a half-sister, Mrs. Bertha Tucker of Chesnee, S.C. ; half brother*, Lester Tmmmt of Shelby, and Hoy Rus? H of Spartanburg; seven grand children and two great grandchildren. Services were conducted Tuesday at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Everett Johnson, the Rev. Earl Turner and the Rev. W.D. James. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Walter Parham, David Moore, Albert Roark, Earl Tucker, Roy Russell Jr., and Bobby Keisler. Mrs. Miller Memorial services for Mrs. Ron (Fern) Miller, of South Miami, Fla., formerly of Marshall, were held Aug. 17 at the First Unitarlan Universalist Church of which she was an active member for many yean. Mrs. Miller, wife of Ron Miller, had been in declining health due to a liver ailment. Her husband is publisher of several newspapers in Florida, Including the Ken dall-South Miami News. Mr. and Mrs. Miller spent several summers In Madison County and have many friends who will be saddened by her death. Mr. Barrett Kermit Barrett, 49, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Mars Hill died Aug. 22 in a Houston hospital after a short illness. He was a service engineer with Martin-Marietta Chemicals and was a son of the late Lloyd and Carrie Davis Barrett. Surviving are his wife, Mary Barrett; a sister, Hester Youngblood of Tampa, Fla.; and a brother, Kenneth Barrett of Garden City, Mich. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 26 in the chapel of Capps Funeral Home. The Rev. HarreU Wood officiated. Burial was in California Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Saturday Services The regular first Saturday night services will be held at Dry Branch Free Will Baptist Church this Saturday night beginning at 7:30. The Rev. Ted Hilton of Johnson City, Tenn., will be the visiting evangelist. Several singing groups are ex pected. Pastor, Donnie Harris, in vites everyone to attend. Board Of Elections Meeting The Madison County Board of Elections meeting, which would normally be for the morning of Sept. 3, will be held instead at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 4 because of Labor Day, Superintendent R.L. Edwards announced. BLUEBERRIES are relatively new to Madison County. During the past 10 years, approximately 200-300 peo ple have planted blueberry bushes. Plantings vary in size from six to 200 bushes. With current prices at the food stores, it is easy to see that blueberries can be an interesting hobby as well as profitable. For very little care a gardener can reap a nutritious supplement to the home food supply. An average-size plan ting for home use would be a dozen plants. Anyone interested in growing blueberries, either for home use or commercially, should contact the Madison County Agricultural Exten sion Office. Applying For Social Security Applying for social security benefits is a simple procedure if you are prepared according to Tom Johnson, field representative of the Asheville Social Security Office. Retirement benefits are payable as early as age 62. However, they are reduced if you take them early. Full benefits are payable at age 65. You don't have to retire to have Medicare at age 65. To make sure you have the full protection of Medicare, you should contact a social security office three months before you reach 65. If you become disabled and it appears you will be unable to work for a year or more, you should apply for disability benefits soon after the disability starts. To be con sidered disabled, you must have a physical or mental condition which prevent! you From working and is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. If you are eligible for Usability benefits, your ipouse and children may also {et benefits. If an insured worker dies, wmeone in the family should ipply for survivor benefits as toon as possible after the worker's death. Survivor >enefits may be paid to an nsured worker's widow or vi dower and children. A Visit To Michigan Mrs. Howard Payne, Mrs. Vader Shelton, and Dr. Vader Shelton Jr. visited Mr. and Mrs. John King in Detroit, Mich., and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Davis and family in Allen Park, Mich., over the weekend. They were flown to Michigan by Dr. Vader Shelton Jr. The temperature of the sun's central core is 15,000,000 de grees Celsius. Republicans Picnic The Republicans will have a picnic at Roy Robert's Cam pgrounds located at Laurel River, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. All are invited to come and bring a covered dish. PERSONAL Col. and Mrs. Joseph Malinoski Jr. and their son have returned to their home at Ft. Devens, Mass., after spen ding several days in Marshall with her mother, Mrs. Ron Sprinkle, and her aunt, Mrs. Edith Clark. Dr. and Mrs. Wayne Massey and their two sons returned Monday to their home in Chatham, Va , after spending a few days in Marshall with Mrs. Massey 's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ramsey. Mrs. Eugene Chandler, her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Chandler, and their infant daughter left Saturday for their home in Fort Huron, Mich., after spen ding a week visiting relatives in Marshall, Walnut, Mars Hill and Asheville.
