GREGG GARRISON COLE ...the former Brenda Diane Duyck Mountain Heritage Day At WCU A black powder shoot, a cat show, a food fair, and the Western Carolina Tobacco Spitting Championship are among the special events to be held Sept. 29 as part of Mountain Heritage Day at Western Carolina University. These four events help demonstrate the diversity of Mountain Heritage Day, and support its claim as "a day full of music, crafts, exhibits, dancing, food and fun for the ? whole family." The Mack powder muzzle loading shoot, co-sponsored by the Jackson County Shooting Club, will include 10 five-shot matches, eight of them for open-sight, flint percussion rifles. There will be offhand matches at 25 and 50 yards, bench rest matches at 50 and 100 yards, ladies' matches at 25 and 50 yards, and two novelty matches at 50 yards. Two pistol matches also are planned, one at 25 yards and one at 50 yards. Trophies will be awarded Reunion The annual Metcalf reunion will be held Sept. 9 at East Fork Baptist Church on Lower Metcalf Creek. Bring a picnic lunch and join us. Special singing in the afternoon. Emery Metcalf will act as moderator. for first, second and third places in each event. A practice session will begin at 8 a.m., and 20-minute relays will be shot from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from noon until 5 p.m. The range will be closed from 11 a.m. until noon, during the dedication of WCU's Moun tain Heritage Center. The cost will be $1.50 per match, and SO cents for practice targets. Re-entry will be allowed in all matches. The McElroys Mark 50th Anniversary The 50th wedding anniversary of Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence McElroy was observed Sunday at an open house given by their children. Friends and relatives from "all over" eh joyed the occasion and the large at tendance attested to the popularity of this fine family. Despite intermittent showers during the afternoon, a constant flow of friends visited the McElroy home on Red mon Road.
