Danger Of Rabies Suggested Two cases of canine rabies have recently been diagnosed in the northern part of South Carolina. The first case was in the Greenville, S.C., area ap proximately two months ago. The second case was in the pageland area within 10 miles of the North Carolina border. Both cases, after investiga tion, appear to be indigenous cases which suggest rabies virus activity in these areas. The rabies epidemic in the raccoon population in South Carolina has not been con firmed in the northern part of the state. However, we must assume that the source of rabies virus for these two cases may have been raccoon. The recent events in South Carolina emphasize the fact that stray dog control ac tivities and rabies vaccination efforts must be increased. It should be emphasized that both dogs and cats should be vaccinated against rabies. Now that canine rabies has been diagnosed so close to our border, North Carolina rabies surveillance activities have been increased. Suspicious animals, both household pets and wildlife, should be reported for rabies diagnosis, particularly from those reported southern counties that border the Souty Carolina line. If you know of such an animal, contact Emery Met calf at the Madison County Health Department, 649-3531.
