Mars Hill Lions Upset Nationally-Ranked Elon

The Man Hill Uou broke a
six-year Jinx last Saturday by
defeating the powerful Eton
Fighting Christians 10-9 in a
superb defensive effort.
Both teams proved to be far
stronger on defease than oo of
fense, but Man Hill surprised
even their own coaching staff
in upsetting the team ranked
second in the NAIA.
"I have to say that our
defense played extremely
well," said head Coach Claude
Gibson, "especially since Eton
is considered a great defen
sive team. You have to
remember that this team has
had 10-0, 9-1 seasons almost
every year we've played
them. And we've never beaten
them in the six years we've
played them."
The Lions' win was no fluke,
either; the Fighting Chris
tians were repeatedly driven
back into their own territory.
Coach Gibson says that the
score would have been con
siderably higher except for
poor luck in kicking.
"The discouraging thing is
that we were down in their end
of the field all night long,"
said Gibson. "We were 0 for 7
in field goals. We had trouble
with snaps, they were drop
ped, the protection broke
down. It was no one thing. But
when the protection is erratic,
the kicker has trouble getting
set."
The Lions' free safety Steve
Campbell was chosen not only
as the defensive player of the
week by the SAC-*, but also
the NA1A district player of the
week for all North Carolina as
well. Campbell made eight
nnassisted tackles, one in
terception, and the game
winning fumble recovery.
Other outstanding players
on defense were defensive
back J.C Burkett, with six
tackles, linebacker John
Gulledge with five intercep
lions and two fumble
recoveries, Clayton Curry,
and OUf Searcy.
One of the most successful
changes Coach Gibson has
made was to move John
Gulledge from defensive
tackle to linebacker. Not only
is Gulledge doing well, but
also his replacement, a 6'4",
225- pound freshman named

Both defenses .performed so
well in the first half that
neither team waa able to
score. The first points came
quickly in the second half,
however, when Elon pulled a
reverse for a big gainer,
followed by an off-tackle
escape by Bob Defreen for 45
yards and six points. The
score took no more than a
minute. Then Phil Renn kick
ed the extra point.
The Lions' First points came
with less than a minute re
maining in the third quarter
when J.C. Burkett tackled
Elon halfback Bobby Hedrick
in the end zone for a two-point
safety.
Then the Mars Hill defense
took offensive matters into

A 1976 graduate of Madison
High School, Marshall, he
joined the Coast Guard in June
1976.

tone for six points. The Lions
then gambled successfully in
sending Dexter Pish around
right end for a two-point con
version to make the score 10-7.
Deep in their own territory
with 54 seconds remaining, the
Lions elected to take a safety
rather than punt from their
own end zone, bringing the
score to 104. After the safety
they got to kick off from their
own SO. Melvin Dunn punted,
in order to get height on the
ball, and Eton ran the ball
back well for 19 yards. A pass
brought the ball nearly to mid
fleld. But finally Steve Camp
bell (topped the final drive
with an interception and a run
back of 63 yards, nearly scor
ing as he did so.
Instrumental in the Mars
Hill victory was the fine pun
ting of Melvin Dunn, who
averaged 41.2 yards for 10
kicks.

For three periods it looked
as though the Madison
Patriots might limit a larger
Erwin team to one touchdown
last Friday night, but War
riors erupted for two more
stores in the fourth period to
win 20-0 at Erwin.
Erwin 's Larry Wilson bulled
his way into the end zone with
9:25 left in the first period on a

think about an upset.
That kind of thinking was
quickly dashed, however, as
the Warriors then exploded in
the person of Larry Wilson,
who ran through the Patriots'
defense repeatedly. They
scored their second TD with
11:07 left, on another six-yard
ruA, and then again with 1:35
left on a 20-yard pass from
Tim Sluder to Randy Ledford.
Wilson was the game's
leading offensive player, with
228 yards on 34 carries, ac
counting for nearly all of Er
. win's 290 yards.
A strong point of the
Patriots' game was their pun
ting. In four punts, Mike
Hensley averaged 43 yards
per kick.
Erwin's defense was for
midable al night, holding
Madison to j ust one yard
rushing and only one pass
completion for 19 yards.
Patriot Coach Mike Cook
said that Madison also did a
good job defensively, playing
well as a unit. He said that the
team's biggest problem was
the inability to generate any
offense; the running backs
were unable to break loose
and the plays did not run
smoothly, he said.
In 1975, U.S. Apollo and So
