After Two- Year Lay-Off Wrestling Returns As A Madison Sport Madison High wrestlers hit the mats Nov. 30 against Mit chell High for the first time after a two year lay-off in the sport. The Patriots lost the decision 60-18, but showed much enthusiam and potential for the future. In the 98 lb. and 112 lb. class Madison had to forfeit because no one on the Patriot club could make weight in those classes. In the 105 lb. class, Marlon Franklin was pinned by Mitchell High's Darrin Wisener with 36 seconds to go in the first period. Ricky McDevitt was pinned by Mit chell's Danny Jarrett with one minute 34 seconds to go in the first period in the 119 lb. class. In the 126 lb. class, Joe Acuff of Mitchell pinned Charlie Sexton with one minute 4 seconds left in the first period. Robert Winker of the 132 lb. class was pinned by Mitchell's Jack Sparks with 49 seconds left in the first period and Tim Mace of Madison was pinned by Joey Ollis of Mitchell with 54 seconds left in the third Patriot Cagers Open Basketball Season Complete team effort enabl ed Madison High's junior var sity girl's team to defeat the Erwin Warriors 40-38 Nov. 30. Donna Flynn headed Madison's top scorers with 9 points while Penny Stanton followed close behind with 8 points. Erwin's Sheila Taylor led their top scoring with -11 points, with Tonya Hamilton having 10 points. Penny Stan ton, Laurie Melvin and Susan Roberts hit crucial free throws in the final quarter to aid the two-point Patriot vic tory. The girls continued their winning ways Dec. 1, as they overcame North Buncombe with a 44-37 double overtime win. Coach Jack Radford noted that Madison shooting was off, but good rebounding by the front line kept them in the ballgame. Foul shooting also helped the win along. Maria Reese and Donna Flynn led Madison's top scoring with 10 points each, while North Buncombe's Tammy Gregg had a total of 18 points. The Madison High Junior Varsity Boy's team lost to the Erwin Warriors 73-56 at Madison. Top scorers for Madison included freshmen Ricky Edwards and Keith Kramer and sophomore Tim Clark with 16, 12, and 11 points respectively, while Erwin's David Hyder had 18 points. Madison coach David Thomas commented that "Erwin was very impressive and had a strong defensive team and though Madison had several turnovers, we kept coming back." Coach Thomas stress ed that Madison's main weakness was not being able to handle Erwin's press. The varsity girl's team also suffered a defeat at the hands of the Warriors, losing 79-64. Madison had several outstan ding scorers, including Holly Hough and Cindy Shelton, ty ing with 14 points apiece, Janet Reed and Denise Thomason with 10 each, and Sandy Franklin whi scored 8 while trying to avoid foul trou ble. Erwin's Teresa Braswell had 20 points with Donna Young scoring 14. Erwin hit 80 percent during the game while Madison hit between 40 per cent and 60 percent but came back to beat the Warriors by 10 in the second half scoring. Coach Ricky McDevitt stated that he was pleased with the girls and and "after we got over our first game jitters, we played great." He pointed out that Erwin had a definite ad vantage over the Patriots. Er win was No. 2 last year in the state and every girl returned. He also noted that this was Er win's second game of the season which gave them add ed experience. The varsity boy's team lost to Erwin 81-66 in their opening game. Erwin led 20-8 in the first quarter and" 46-27 at halftime. Madison managed to cut the score to 9 points with 3 minutes left in the game but couldn't seem to pull together for the win. Coach Joe Kruk said that Madison committed 38 turnovers. Keith Flynn led the scoring for Madison with 21 points, with Dwayne Buckner and Tim Merrill hitting for 10 each. Erwin's David Nelson scored 28 points while Walter Clement followed with 11. The game left Erwin with a 2-0 record, while Madison is 0-1. In seventh and eighth grade basketball, the Madison girls team beat Avery 40-18, and the boys beat Avery 36-22. GENAWORLEY I ? period. Madison's John Clark pinn ed Mitchell's Scott Buchanan for the 145 lb. class victory, and Madison's Fran Randall won the 155 lb. class, pinning Mitchell's Steve Hiss with 9 seconds left in the second period. Joe Scarborough wrestling for Madison in the 167 lb. class lost to Mitchell's Keith Jones by a pin fall with 59 seconds left in the first period. Ronnie Roberts, a 165 pounder wrestling in the 185 lb. class for Madison, put on a fine performance and beat Mitchell's Van Duncan by a pin with a minute and 8 seconds left in the second period. Madison's Greg Meadows of the 195 lb. class was pinned by Mitchell's Edgar Young with 54 seconds left in the first period and Madison's Lome Maxwell wrestling ithe unlimited weight class lost to Mitchell's Mark Franklin with a minute and 42 seconds left in the first period. VFW Awards Clark Title All State VFW Post 5483 Commander Clifford Bates announced that Miss Crystal Clark, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nial Clark of Gabriels Creek Road, was recently awarded a first place in the Voice of Democracy Contest at the county level, which is sponsored each year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
