Dea"ls And Funerals ? ? ?*- '..l_ ; ' > j James E. Cook James Edward Cook, 73, of Route X, Hot Springs, died Dec. l at bis home A lifelong resident of Madison County, he waa a retired fanner. He was the son of the late George and-Melinda Chandler Cook. Surviving are his wife, Sofina Tweed Cook; five sons. James S. Cook of Atlanta. Ronald, Leonard, Johnny and David Cook of Hot Springs; five daughters, Jo Helen Landers of Stanley, Georgia Lee Rollins and Elizabeth Ward of Greeneville, Tenn , Thelma Williams of Newport, T?on. , and Ruth Stanley of Hot Springs; a brother, G.W. Cook of Marshall; five sisters, Nadine Atkins and Nettie Gosnell of Marshall, Paula Gahagan and Susie Roberts of Spartanburg, S.C., Viola Shelton of Travelers Rest, S.C.; X grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Services were held at i p.m. Dec. 4 in the Paint Rock Church of God, of which he was a member. The Rev. Jay Griffin and Father Jeff Burton officiated. Burial was in Scott Chandler Cemetery. Bowman Funeral Home was in charge. Marshall Man Jailed In Hit-and-Run Lloyd Stines of Marshall was arrested Nov. 28 and charged with hit-and-run driv ing following an accident in Hot Springs. The accident victim, Gif ford Welch of Strawberry Plains, Tenn., was reproted to have suffered a broken leg, lacerations of the face and body, and possibly other in juries. He was taken to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. According to Madison Coun ty Sheriff E.Y. Ponder, the ac cident occurred beside Ander son Motor Sales in Hot Spr ings, at the edge of Highway 25/70. At the time, Welch, a driver for an oil company in Knoxville, was delivering a load of fuel. Just as he was finishing the job, a car owned by a friend of Stines, and allegedly driven by Stines, was traveling north on 25/70. The car swung out to pass another car, and in doing so it went out of control, skid ding sideways and striking the truck and Welch. Welch, who had been preparing to leave, was knocked underneath the truck and severely injured. Stines was named by eyewitnesses as the drive of the car, arrested, and taken to Madison County Jail. Farmers Should Report Any ACP Aid Several fanners in the coun ty have received assistance through the Agricultural Con servation Program (ACP), which is the responsibility of the ASCS Office to administer. The latest report date set by the ASC County Committee for farmers to report perfor mance is Dec. 31, 1979, accor ding to W.B. Zink, Executive Director for ASCS in Madison County. If for reasons beyond the control of the farmer the prac tice has not been completed and reported, they may re quest the County ASC Com mittee to carry the practice over to the next calendar year, I960, so they may have time to use the material and report performance on the practice. Reported practices are sub ject to spot check by a Scouts To Sell Christmas Trees Dec. 8 Marshall Scout Troop 522 will begin their Christmas tree Bale Dec. 8 on the Marshall by pass. The trees they have to offer are of very fine quality having been grown by an agricultural doctor specifically for Christmas trees. The trees will be sold at comparatively low prices. All the money from the sale will go to the troop for the ac tivities the boys have planned for next year, including sum mer camp. The sale will con tinue up to Christmas. representative of the ASCS Of fice, so care should be taken to complete the practice accor ding to program re quirements. pasture and hayland which has been seed ed or topdressed using A CP funds must have the vegetative cover maintained at no expense to the govern ment for a period of five years after the year cost-shares were used. This means that the area seeded or improved can not be plowed up. Singing The regular second Sunday night singing will be held on Dec. 9 at the Alexander Bap tist Church, beginning at 7 p.m. All singers and listeners are welcome. A native at Madison County and a resident of River Rouge for several yean, he was employed by Whitehead and Caie Steel Co. Davis John L. Davis, 76, of Route 6 Marshall died Nov. 27 at his home following a period of declining health. A native of Madison County, he was retired from Fabricon Products, plastics division, in River Rouge, Mich. He was a son of the late Patterson and Jeanett Ramsey Davis. Surviving are a son, Pender Davis of Little Rock, Ark.; four daughters, Fomia Worley of Asheville, Betsy Price, Ber nice Reece and Florence Davis of Marshall; two sisters, Ethel Rice of Asheville and Dorothy Clark of Marshall; IS grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 30 in Darris Chapel Bap tist Church of which he was a member. The Rev. Gerald Sprinkle and the Rev. Jack Davis officiated. Burial was in Henderson Cemetery.
