Low-Level Bombers (Continued From Page 1) The Strategic Air Command conducts low-level bombing and navigational training to assure bomber crews are kept combat ready at all times. The routes are changed periodical ly ta provide unfamiliar largets and radar returns to :ombat air crews. Populated areas are avoided as much as possible and all routes are coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration. Although this is an FAA established route, pilots of private aircraft are reminded that during the period of fly ing, high speed, camouflaged jet aircraft may be operating f at any time, day or night and during Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and Visual Flight Rules (VFR) conditions. Pilots operating in the vicinity of the low-level route are re quested to operate rotating beacons and/or strobe lights in order to aid in their detec tion by other aircraft. Tom, Randy McDevitt Serve In Air Force of Ralph and McDevitt, US Rum bough PI., Aahevilfc, former residen U of Madison County, arc serving with the U.S. Air Force Sgt. Thomas R. McDevitt has arrived for duty at Wiesbaden Air Base, Ger many. McDevitt, an electronic communications equipment specialist, was previously assigned at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., and is now serving with a unit of Air Force Com munications Command. His wife, the former Donna Reeves, and kids, Jeremy and Amy, joined him in Germany Dec. 3. Randy McDevitt was recently graduated from Air Force Military Training Center at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Randy graduated as an honor student, maintained a 98 percent grade average on all written technical tests and received high marks on all performance evaluations. In addition, Randy exhibited ex cellent conduct throughout his stay at Lackland. Honor students are selected from the top S percent of all Air Force enlisters. City Hall In Marshall Closed 3 Days The town offices in Marshall will close for the Christmas holidays from Dec. 24-26. Courthouse Holiday Schedule The Madison County Cour thouse will be closed for the Christmas holiday from Mon day through Wednesday, Dec. 24-2f. No Garbage Pickup On Dec. 24 The town of Marshall will not pick up garbage on Dec. 24 because of Christmas holidays. Tom and Randy are the grandsons of Alpha McDevitt and the late P.N. McDevitt and Berzilla Wallin and the late R. Lee Wallin of Madison County. Hospital News Vernon Wood continues to make improvement at the Oteen Hospital where he is a patient following a stroke two weeks ago. Tommie Rector of Marshall is a patient in the VA Hopsital at Oteen after suffering third degree burns at his home Dec. 10. The burns resulted from the explosion of a cigarette lighter, according to his wife, Mary. He is in serious condi tion and is expected to undergo surgery as a result of infection. DENISE ALLEN, daughter of Troy and Catherine Allen of Marshall, has recently ac cepted the position of depart ment manager for Ivey's in the Asheville Mall. Denise is a 1975 graduate of Madison High and a 1979 graduate of Ap palachian State University, where she received a B.S. in fashion merchandising and a minor in business administra tion. Denise is now living in Asheville. NORTH CAROLINA district ex tension chairman Denver Robin son, center (holding plaque), was surprised when eight county agents traveled over 250 miles to see him receive a Berea College Service Award Dec. 6. Six of them are either from or now work in Madison County. The county agents, all Berea College graduates, are, left to right, Jack Earley, *54; Wiley Duvall, '53; Earl Wise, '55; Mr. and Mrs. Robinson; J.B. Reeves, '73; Gary Hyatt, '76; Kenneth Reeves, '74; Bobby Peek, '59; and Gary Ealey, '69. Savings Bonds Will Be Called Energy Bonds After January 1 The Treasury Department has announced that the new Series EE savings bonds which go on sale effective Jan. 1 will be called United States Energy Savings Bonds, Series EE, and will receive a '?$ per cent bonus if held to maturity. The interest rate on U.S. Energy Savings Bonds, Series EE, will be increased from 6.5 percent to 7 percent for bonds held for the full 11 years to maturity. Series E bonds that have not finally matured and U.S. Savings Notes ("Freedom Shares)" will also receive the '/fc percent bonus if they are held for 11 years from the date of the first semian nual interest period that begins on or after Jan. 1, 1980. Bonds and notes redeemed earlier will not receive the bonus. The redesignation of the bonds as Energy Savings Bonds is intended to help focus attention on the national goals of reducing energy consump tion and increasing domestic supplies. The bonds were known sa Defense Bonds before and after World War II and as War Bonds from 1941 to 1945 reflecting the national concerns of those times. The Energy Savings Bonds will assist in financing the large federal energy expenditure re quired in the coming years. After June 30, I960, all U.S. Savings Bonds bought through payroll savings plans will be Energy Savings Bonds, Series EE. Series H and HH savings bonds will not be affected by these changes.
