Prepare Children Now
For New Experience
If your little one is starting
kindergarten this fall, you can
be sure it will be a whole new
world for him.
Dr. Frances Wagner, exten
sion human development
specialist at North Carolina
State University, says you can
get your child off on the "right
foot" by starting to prepare
now.
"Start teaching and review
ing such things as the child's
name, age, address, telephone
number, parents' names and
where the parents work," the
specialist advises. "This is
something older brothers and
sisters might enjoy teaching
the first time student."
Since there is a lot of de
mand for a teacher's attention
at school, it is helpful if your
child can go to the bathroom
alone, can dress and undress
alone and knows how to use
ties, buttons and zippers.
Show your child the
shortest, safest route to school
or bus stop and walk it
together several times. Dr.
Wagner points out that it is a
good idea to have your child
walk it alone a few times
before school starts.
Discuss the importance of
going home when school is out
unless other plans have been
made. Point out neighbors or
people along the route who
could help if trouble or bad
weather occurs.
"Teach your child to look
carefully and watch for cars
before crossing a street," Dr.
Wagner adds. "Make sure he
understands why to cross the
street only at crossings and
only with the traffic light."
Dr. Wagner recommends
setting and following daily
routines now so your child will
be used to this when school
starts. For example, have
your child go to bed at roughly
the same time he will go to bed
during school.
When your child gets up in
the morning, have him eat a
good breadfast, wash hands
and face, brush teeth and
dress in clean clothes.
"It also helps to give your
child some responsibility, as
this is an unexpected part of
the school routine," Dr.
Wagner says. "Helping with
household tasks such as clean
ing a room is a good respon
sibility. Other possibilities in
clude taking care of clothes or
toys or caring for a pet."
Before sending your child to
kindergarten, have him go
through physical, dental and
visual examinations. Make
sure your child has all needed
immunizations.
