Madison County Deaths Joe Briggs Ida Harrison Funeral services were held Tuesday for Joe Tom Briggs of Marshall who died Sunday in Madison County nursing home. He was 85 years old. Services were held in the chapel of the Capps Funeral Home in Mars HU1. The Rev. Kenneth Parker officiated. Burial was conducted in the Rice Cemetery. A native of Tennessee, he lived in Madison County most of his life. He was a son of the late Lou Haney Lloyd Briggs Hensley. Surviving are two half brothers, Zeb Hensley of Mar shall and Solomon Hensley of Valdese. Fletcher Massey Funeral services were held Tuesday for Fletcher Massey of Monticello Rd., who died Sunday in an Asheville hospital. Services were held in the funeral chapel of the West Funeral Home in Weaverville. Dr. Fred Werhan officiated. Burial was conducted in the Mount Sheba Cemetery. A native of Madison County, he was the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Ott Massey of Weaver ville. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are four daughters, Sandra Mashburn and Jo Anne Crouch of Asheville, Peggy Hudgins and Rosa Lee Wilson of Candler; six sisters, Marie Rice, Clara Gaddy, and Lucille Rice of Weaverville and Judy Herlin, Elsie Davis and Roxie Lester of Alex ander; four brothers, George Spencer and Joseph Ott Massey of Weaverville and J.C. Massey of Arden; and nine grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be made to Thorns Rehabilitation Center. Mollie Chandler Funeral services were held Friday for Mollie Franklin Chandler, who died March 2 in a Greenville, Tenn. hospital after an extended illness. Services were held in the Shady Grove Baptist Church, wrth the Rev. Lonnie Crawford officiating. Burial was conducted in the Chandler family cemetery. Mrs. Chandler was a lifelong resident of Madison County, a daughter of the late William and Linda Bullman Franklin, and the wife of Jackie Chandler, who died in 1933. Docia Ball Funeral services were held Sunday for Docia Jane Baker Ball, who died March 2. She was 91 years old. Services were held in the chapel of the Groce Funeral Home in Asheville. The Revs. Robert L. Moore and John E. Jones officiated. Burial was conducted in Green Hills Cemetery. A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Newton F. and Laura Jane Worley Baker. She was a graduate of Dorland Bell Presbyterian School in Hot Springs and Asheville Normal and Teachers College. A former school teacher at the Presbyterian Home Mis sions, she was also the former owner and operator of the Plateau Studios. She was also a member of the Eastern Star ^nd the West Asheville Presbyterian Church. Surviving are seven sons, William, Stanley, Ben, Jeter, Hubert, Andrew and Marvin Chandler, all of Marshall; a daughter, Ruth Ray of Mar shall; a sister, LUlie Ramsey of Marshall ; 90 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. Marvin McClure Funeral services were held Thursday for Marvin W. Mc Clure of Walnut who died March 1 in an Asheville hospital after an extended il lness. He was 77 years old. Services were held in the chapel of the Bowman Funeral Home in Marshall. The Rev. Steve Robinson, Jimmy Buckner and Jack Jones officiated. Burial was conducted in Walnut Cemetery. A lifelong resident of Madison County, he was a son of the late S.W. and Lillian Ramsey McClure. He retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation in 1969 after 40 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Georgia Gibson McClure; two sisters. Myrtle Reed and Virginia McClure of Marshall ; his stepmother, Etha McClure of Marshall and several nieces apd nephews. William Merrill Funeral services were held Friday for William Scott Mer rill of Brevard who died Wednesday from injuries in an automobile accident. He was 18 years old. He was a freshman at Mars Hill College where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Omega fraternity and a senator of the freshman class. A memorial service was conducted in the First Baptist Church of Brevard of which he was a member. Graveside ser vices were conducted in Pisgah Gardens. The Revs. Duncan Futrelle, Lenpie Farmer and Bill McManus of ficiated. He is survived by his parents, Robert L. and Lois Heath Merrill of Brevard, two sisters, Deborah Kay Merrill of Hendersonville and Elizabeth Ann Merrill of Brevard; a brother, Robert L. Merrill Jr. of Asheville; the paternal grandmother, Alma Buie of Hendersonville; and the maternal grandmother, Pearl Heath of Brevard. The family requests the memorials be made to the scholarship fund of Mars Hill College. Mary Boyd Mary Sue Penland Boyd, of Marietta, Ga., died Sunday at her home after an extended il lness. A native of Madison County, she had resided in Marietta for the past 14 years and was a daughter of Bessie Lee Ed wards Penland of Marshall and the late James N. Penland. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her hus band, Sanford Boyd; two daughters. Sherry Hughes of the home and Karen Carter of Harm, Ga.; three brothers, James, Joe Sr., and George Penland, all of Marshall; two sisters, Minnie Lee Doran of Hendersonville and Jean Price of Asheville; and two grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Marshall Presbytereian Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. George Moore and Bud dy Freeman will officiate. Burial will be in Pritchard Cemetery. Funeral services were held Mar. 3 for Ida Harrison of Clarkl Chapel Rd. who died Feb. 27 at the age of 90. Services were held in the chapel of the West Funeral Home in Weaverville. A native of Buncombe Coun ty, she was a daughter of the late Loranzo and Lucilla Head Blankenship and the wife of Kelsey Harrison who died in 1929. She was a retired practical nurse. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Glen Bradley of Weaverville, Louise Lytle of Monks Corner, S.C. and Margaret Chatlan of New Orleans, La. ; a son, David M. Harrison of Weaverville; a brother, Clyde Blankenship of Weaverville; four grand children and five great grandchildren. Frank Cogdill Funeral services were held Thursday for Frank R. Cogdill of Centerville, Ga., who died Mar. 1 in a Georgia hospital after an extended illness. He was 87 years old. Services were held in the funeral chapel of the Bowman Funeral Home in Marshall. The Rev. Ralph Easterly of ficiated. Burial was conducted in Oak Hill Cemetery. A native of Cocke County, Tenn., he was a retired farmer and a veteran of World War I. He was a son of the late Joseph and Margaret Shelley Cogdill. Surviving are a daughter, Jewell Ropct of Centerville, Ga.; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Jesuit Group Welcomes New Priest Rev. Vincent Alagia, S.J., is the newest member of the group at the Jesuit Residency in Hot Springs. He came to Hot Springs last August and spends much of his time traveling to tell people about the opportunity for prayer and reflection on a retreat to Hot Springs. He is associate direc tor of the House of Prayer. Father Alagia has retreat house experience for the last seven years and has also been involved in the world-wide marriage encounter move MHC Offers Israel Tour Mars Hill College's depart ment of religion and philosophy, in conjunction with Wilcox World Tours, will sponsor an 11-day excursion to Israel and Greece June 7-17. The group will depart New York on Olympic Airlines and arrive in Athens on the follow ing day. In Greece, the group will visit the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Agora of an cient Athens, and Mara Hill where Paul preached to the philosophers of Athens. Old Corinth will be visited oft the third day, and there will be an optional tour offered to visit the islands of Aegina, Hydra, and Poros.
