Lichens And Moss JMay Suffocate Trees By WILEY DuVALL Agricultural Extension Agent Algae, lichens, and mosses grow profusely on trunks, limbs, and twigs of many trees and shrubs. Cool, cloudy, wet weather is ideal for these organisms. Algae are the simplest of green plants. They were pro bably the first food producing organisms in the evolution of life on earth. They are present nearly everywhere. They are numerous almost any place that has sufficient moisture, such as on tree trunks, shrubs, soil, rocks, and walls, as well as in fresh or salt water. In large numbers, algae form the scum on ponds and wet areas in lawns. Lichens have two com ponents - a fungus and an algae living in association with one another to give the appearance of a single plant. Lichens grow on soil, trunks and branches of trees and shrubs, and on rocks. Like the algae, lichens manufacture their own food. They occur in several forms, such as crusty gray, green, yellow, or white growths. Some are leaf-like, others resemble a tuft of horse hair hanging from the bran ches. Mosses are green plants somewhat similar to algae, except they have evolved fur ther into miniature plant-like structures with stems and leaves. Because they contain chlorophyll, mosses can Ronnie Rigsby BRUSH CREEK GULF & GROCERY Owner & FARM SUPPLIES "If I Don't Have It, 649-9041 I Can Get It." Mosses occur on soils, on tree trunks and branches, on rocks, and in water. Liver worts are closely related to the mosses and grow under similar conditions. Since all of these primitive plants contain chlorophyll and make their own food, they do not directly injure the plant on which they grow. Heavy I! i , growth, however, may have a suffocating effect and can reduce the sunlight reaching the leaves. Some people like the "hitch-hiking" plants as they add a bit of color to shrubbery and trees during the winter. At times the growth may become objec tionable or unsightly and one may want to control it. On deciduous trees (shade, fruit, nut) use tribasic copper sulfate ? 2 pounds per 100 gallons of water or 4 teaspoons per gallon. Add a small amount of dish washing detergent to the spray mixture or use liquid lime sulphur ? 8 ounces per gallon of water This mixture can also be used on deciduous shrubs (azalea.
