Mary York Joyce, 48, of Mars Hill was charged on April 3 by Highway Patrolman C.E. Taylor, who investigated the accident some 2.65 miles east of Burnsville. Taylor ob tained blood samples from Joyce at the Burnsville Health Care Facility, where she was treated and released. The blood sample was sent to the State Bureau of Investigation laboratory in Raleigh for analysis. According lo police reports. Maude Woody Hughe*, M, of Mtcaville, died when the 1977 Ford Pinto driven by her daughter, Chriatina Gay Hughes, 4S, of MicaviUe, swerved into the left lane of U.S. 19 East to avoid the car driven by Joyce, which was coining toward her in the wrong lane. Witnesses at the scene told the investigating officer that they had seen Joyce's car swerving in the highway shortly before the accident. The officer said he recovered a partially consumed bottle of wine under the driver's seat of the 1981 Buick driven by Joyce. According to evidence at the scene, Joyce was driving the 1W1 Buick toward BurnsviUe when the car crossed the center line. Mrs. Hughes ap parently saw the car and swerved to the left to avoid a collision.
