W'ville Church Presents "Life Of Christ " The Weaverville United Methodist Church will present "The Liufe of Jesus", a pageantplay depicting the life of Christ from prophecy to resurrection, will be presented on April 14 at 8 p.m. The four-act production, directed by Patti Young and Dave Horn, is the result of the work of some 35 church members The play, will be presented at the Weaverville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joseph Sorrell will narrate the production Andy Duff plays the role of Christ in his adult years. The April 14 presentation will mark the culmination of a two-year project first begun by a small group of women at the church. Mary Carlson and Kay Baluss, who wrote much of the script, took the passages from scripture to construct ) the pageant In addition to the script, church members have been busy preparing props, sets and costumes and rehearsing their roles. Some 35 church members have parts in the presentation. The play presents a succes sion of events in the life of Christ from the prophesies of Isaiah, through Jesus' ministry and crucifixtion. UNC-A Plans Palm Sunday Concert A Palm Sunday concert Aril IS featuring music ranging from Handel's "Messiah" to "Jesus Christ Superstar" will be performed at the Universi ty of North Carolina at Asheville. The 4 p.m. concert at Lipin sky Auditorium will be per formed by UNCA's 35-voice University Singers under the direction of Dewitt Tipton. Tipton calls the program "a survey of traditional and con temporary music illustrating the Lenten-season ideas of penitence, sorrow and rejoic ! ?? I ing. The concert opens with "Hosanna to the Son of David" by David Moe, a 20th-century composer, and closes with nine selections from "Jesus Christ SupermUr." "The concert is framed by works representing the more joyous sense o i the Easter season, while the middle parts of the program are more con templative," says Tipton. The program includes selec tions from Handel's "Messiah," "Out of the Dep ths" by Alan Hovhaneas, and a selection from Beethoven's 'The Mount of Olives." Also performed will be three ver sions of "Ave Verum Corpus" ("Hail True Body") from Mozart in the 18th century. William Byrd in the 16th cen tury, and Edward Elgar in the early 20th century. The "Jesus Christ Superstar" selections will be accompanied by the UNCA Studio Ensemble, a four-piece rock group directed by Wayne Kirby. UNCA's resident dec ironic music composer. "The 'Superstar' selections trace the life of Jesus from the week of Palm Sunday through the Crucifixion," says Tipton "This rock opera was very controversial when it first ap peared in the early 1970s, but it's a great piece of music and I think it's time we listen to it again." Admission is 92 for adults and 91 for children. The con cert is sponsored in part by the UNCA Music Club and is part of the university's fourth an I nual Celebration of the Arts. UNCA Offers Bible Study Class "The Bible and Culture" is the title of a week-long con ference April 8-12, at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. The conference is intended for a lay audience and is open to the public without charge, says Dr. Margaret J. Downes. the UNCA humanities pro fessor who organized the con ference. "This conference should ap peal to those groups whose primary interest in the Bible is based on faith and to those whose primary interest is bas ed on intellectual curiosity," says Dr. Downes. The conference begins Sun day. April 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Carmichael Humanities Lec ture Hall with "Reading the Bible: A Non-denominational Approach," a lecture by Dr. Roland G. Murphy, the G. W. Ivey Professor of Bible Studies at Duke University. The conference continues Monday, April 9 at U a.m. with a community forum in Lipinsky Auditorium titled "Cultural Roots of the Bible." Panelists include Dr. Roland G. Murphy, UNCA music pro fessor Dr Frank Edwinn. and Dr. Constance Head, pro fessor of history and religion at Western Carolina Universi ty. "The Bible and American Culture" is the topic of a Wednesday, April 11 lecture by Dr. Grant Wacker, a religion professor at UNC Chapel Hill. The 7 p.m. talk will be held in the Pack Library Auditorium. The conference concludes Thursday, April 12 at 2:30 p.m. with a community forum on "The Influence of the Bible on Southern Culture."
