Hunt, Alexander To Mark Great Smokies Anniversary Secretary of the Interior William Clark will join Gover nors James Hunt of North Carolina and Lamar Alex ander of Tennessee at ceremonies marking the 50th Anniversary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, June 15 at Newfound Gap. A day-long observance of the park's Golden Anniver sary will begin with morning festivities in Gatlinburg, Tenn., and culminate with evening activities in Cherokee, N.C., according to John Cook, Superintendent of Great Smoky Mountains Na tional Park. Mr. Cook said that several local, regional, state and na tional officials will be involved in the Newfound Gap fate, beginning at noon. Members of the Congressional delega tions of North Carolina and Tennessee also will par ticipate in the Golden Anniver sary ceremony, expected to draw several thousand spec tators. Attendees, said Superinten dent Cook, will be transported by bus from sites at Gatlin burg and Cherokee, due to parking constraints at New found Gap. Cook said the New found Gap Road (U.S. Highway 441) will be cloGed to all traffic from midnight, June 14, through late afternoon, June IS, to facilitate bus transportation of participants and attendees. The Newfound Gap ceremony will highlight more than ISO events that are being conducted this year throughout the Smokies area. These activities are thematic to the unique culture of the mountains and the variety of attractions and recreational opportunities in the area of the 500,000-acre na tional park, shared by North Carolina and Tennessee. Almost nine million recrea tional visitors were recorded last year at the Great Smokies, making it the most popular national park in the United States These special Golden Anniversary activities are expected to promote in creased interest, awareness, and visitation to the park area in this and future years. Hunter Reports For Duty U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. James S. Hunter, the son of Stanley and Evelyn Hunter of Route 1, Mars Hill, has reported for duty with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. Hunter will be stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point. Reynolds Industries, Inc. today declared the regular quarterly cash dividend of 80 cents per share on the outstan ding common stock of the cor poration. Assistance with developing subdivision regula tions can be obtained and the DNRCD has a model subdivi sion ordinance that local governments can consider. Oameron emphasized in clteing that the people of western North Carolina local government officials and Western North Carolina Tomorrow are not opposed to development. It was generally agreed that the region needs development, but not shoddy development that leaves substandard roads for residents and state govern ment to repair at high casta. We need "development with conscience," emphasised Huskins. Dr. Joe Phillips, chairman of the N. C. Sedimentation Control Com mission, stated that the region has some very beautiful, high quality developments. It is possible to have the kind of development that benefits those moving to the region and the communities into which they move. Right now our road and sub division construction is caus ing an average loss of 20 tons of soil per disturbed acre an nually. The state commission goals is to reduce this to ? tons per year.
