May Is Older Americans Month Governor Jim Hunt has pro claimed May at Older Americans Month in North Carolina. In his proclamation, the governor stated that "older citizens have earned the respect of all North Caroli nians because their knowledge, experience, and wisdom is an invaluable resource." As part of the month long observance of Older Americans tyonth. Hunt has also proclaimed the week of May 6 through 12 as Senior Center Week in North Carolina, and Mot here's Day, May 13, as the start of Nursing Home Week throughout the state. The theme of Older Americans Month is "Health: Make It Last a Lifetime." In keeping with that theme, Ernest Messer, assistant secretary of the N.C. Depart ment of Human Resources' Division of Aging, said that North Carolina has placed a special emphasis on progr qams to improve the health of older adults through the wise use of drugs, good nutrition, physical fitness, and injury prevention Messer said that during Senior Center Week many of North Carolina's 70 senior centers are planning fitness fairs and a "Walk for Your Life," as part of the obser vance. Senior centers act as focal points for communities to better meet the special needs of older adults through recreational, cultural, social, health, and educational ac tivities. Messer encouraged North Carolinians to attend local ceremonies during Nursing Home Week to recognize and show support for the residents, volunteers, and health professionals at the state's nursing homes "Only five percent of our older citizens live in nursing homes, rest homes, and other institutions," he said. "The vast majority of older adults live at home and continue to make important contributions to society. Older Americans Month is a perfect time for all of us to recognize those special contributions and achievements." He added that there are almost a million North Caroli nians over the age of sixty, and this "graying" of the population will have far reaching social and economic implications. "As North Carolina prepares for the future, we are working to find new and mean ingful ways for older adults to continue in the mainstream of life, to avoid economic hard ships, to have healthy lifestlyes, and to remain in dependent and live in their own homes and communities for as lonfl as nnssihU* " Volunteer Week Begins May 6 through 12 is National Volunteer Week, which marks the start-up of Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyers (MAVL), a program sponsored by Pisgah Legal Services and private attorneys in Bun combe, Henderson, Madison, Polk, Rutherford and Tran sylvania Counties. Volunteer lawyers for MAVL will pro vide free legal services to elderly and low-income clients /^i in non-criminal cases. The program is designed to meet the increasing need for legal services at a time when federal funding for legal ser vices for the poor has been reduced. People who need but cannot afford legal representation are interviewed by Pisgah Legal Services for income eligibility and case type. An applicant who is approv ed for representation is refer *? 1 red to a participating private attorney with expertise to han dle the client's problem. Par ticipating attorneys aggree to provide free representation for two clients referred by the program per year. "Our goal is to utilize the available legal resources ef fectively to address the unmet need for legal services by our clients," said Bill Whalen, staff attorney for Pisgah Legal Services. "We are gratified by the strong support of private attorneys in our area for this program. Their volunteer effort will enable many people with pressing legal problems to have the representation they need but cannot afford." Gospel Singing Set A gospel singing at the Arrington Branch Baptist Church is planned for May 13, 1984 at 7 p.m. Featured singers will be The Happy Hearts, the Sexton Singers and the Laymen Quartet, and others. The Pastor, Rev. Kenneth Parker invites everyone to attend. He was a tough kid. The neighbors were afraid of him, and the public schools had expelled him. But he had a friend who loved him. One day the boy said to him, "You're good, and you always do the right things. I'm bad, and I always do the wrong things. If you could just come into me, then I'd be good." That is the secret of living the Christian life! It is not a question of repression ? that is, sup pressing the wrong feelings within. If I am boiling within I might as well boil without. It is not by imitation. Some people are always trying to imitate Christ or Christians ; trying and praying to be good. Just like the girl who prayed, "God, make me good. If at first You don't succeed, try again." But it is by the in-coming Christ. Being a Christian and living the Christian life is inviting Christ to come into your heart and allowing Him to live His life all over again in you. And the good news is Christ wants to live in you.
