chapel in Marshall for Bennie
Thomas, who died last Friday
at his home on Revere Road.
He was 83.
A retired employee of Gor
don Steel Co. in States ville,
Thomas was a native of
Madison County. He was the
son of Wade and Esther
Gunter Thomas and a
member of Dew Drop Church
of God.

The extended period of wet
reather in April and May has
a used much hardship for
iadison County farmers,
"hey have been unable to
omplete land preparation for
pring crops. Early-seeded
obacco plant beds are becom
ng too large, and some have
been mowed back in order to
prolong the time when they
can be transplanted. Many ot
the later-seeded beds have ex
perienced growth problems
because of too much water
and cold nights.
Dairymen are running
behind in the planting of silage
corn. Very little corn had
been planted before last week.
Tomato growers are behind
schedule, too. Growers in the
Hot Springs area have a few
plants in the ground, but these
growers had some anxious
moments during frosts of the
previous week.
Some of the beating rains of
the last two months have
made farmers more aware of
the need for conservation
practices to prevent toil ero
sion. Strip cropping on steep
hillsides could slow down
much of this erosion.
One bright spot has been the
growth of pasture and hay
crop grasses. Ground water
levels should be recovering
from the drought of last sum
mer.
