Columbus Moore
Funeral services will be
held this afternoon for Colum
bus W. Moore of Weaverville
who died Monday in (he
Asheville VA Medical Center
at the age of >3.
Services will be held in the
Longs Chapel Baptist Church,
of which he was a member.
Burial will be conductedin the
church cemetery.
A native of Madison County,
he was the son of the l?te A.L.
and Cora Maynor Moore.
Mr. Moore is survived by his
wife, Molly Watkins Moore; a
daughter, Kathryn Ingle of
Weaverville; two sons, Colum
bus Bill' Moore and the Rev.
Jim Moore of Weaverville;
three sisters, Vesti Banks of
Indiana, Pa. and Leona Whit'
ted and Frankie King of
Weaverville; six grand
children and three great
grandchildren.
Senia Rice
Funeral services were held
Saturday morning for Senia
Chandler Kice of Mars Hill
who died July 4 in an Asheville
hospital at the age of 82.
Services were held in the
Bethel Baptist Church, of
which she was a member. The
Revs. Troy Rogers and Joe
Honeycutt officiated. Burial
was conducted in the church
cemetery.
A lifelong resident of
Madison County, she was the
widow of the late Ben Rice.
Mrs. Rice is survived by a
daughter, Mary Cecil Jarvis
of Mars Hill; two brothers,
Lynn and Charlie Chandler of
Mars Hill; and a grand
daughter.
John Jervis
Funeral services were held
Sunday for John EJwood Jer
vis of Asheville who died July
5 at the age of 75.
Services were held in the
Green Hill Cemetery with the
Rev. Gene Rainey officiating.
A native of Madison .County,
he was the son of the late Cecil
Porter and Margaret Lucille
Caldwell Jarvis.
Mr. Jarvis was involved in
the organized labor movement
for 40 years. He retired in 1976
as president of the Ashevilie
Central Labor Union, a posi
tion he held for 28 years. He
was a former employee of
American Enka Co. and was
instrumental in forming Enka
Local No. 2596 He was also
associated with the Meatcut
ters, Flint Glasworkers and
Textile Workers Union and
was a member of the Food and
Allied Workers Local 525 and
Carpenters Local 384 in
Asheville
He was also a past member
of the board of directors of the
Eltada Home for Children, a
former magistrate of the Bun
combe County courts and
served on the advisory board
of the Salvation Array.
He is survived by his wife,
Ruby Lee Press ley Jervis;
three sons, Charles Jervis of
Asheville, Glen Jervis of
Girard, Ga. and William Jer
vis of Hawaii; and seven
grandchildren.
Mollie Griffin
Funeral services were held
Sunday afternoon for Mollie
Buckner Griffin of AshCville
who died July 6 at her home at
the age of 89.
Services were held in the
Up0er Walnut Creek Baptist
Church with the Revs. Landon
Rice and Kenneth Parker of
ficiating. Burial was con
ducted in the Rice Cove
Cemetery.
A native of Madison County,
she was the daughter of the
late Noah and Mary Ann Rice
Buckner and the widow of
Ralph Griffin who died in 1950
She was a member of the Big
Laurel Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons;
the Rev. Jay Griffin of Mar
shall and Willie Griffin of
King's Mountain; a daughter,
Mrs. Paul Coates of the home;
two sisters, Nellie Bishop and
Mrs. Dolson Crowe of Morgan
ton; eight grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.

Edmonds of Mars Hill who
died July 3 at the age of 57.
Services were held in the
Upper Laurel Baptist Church
with the Revs. Cline Hensley,
Jr. and Howard Ogle of
ficiating. Burial was con
ducted in the church
cemetery.
A lifelong resident of
Madison County, he was the
son of Fred and Mary
Callahan Edmonds of Mars
Hill. Mr. Edmonds was a
former employee of Mills
Manufacturing Co. and a
member of the Little Ivy Bap
tist Church.
In addition to his parents, he
is survived by his wife, Tassie
Wilson Edmonds of Mars Hill;
three daughters, Margaret
Hensley of Asheville and Wan
da Gail Capps and Mary Lee
Marler of Mars Hill; three
sons, Terry and Jerry Ed
monds of Mars Hill and James
Edmonds of Asheville; a
sister, Irene Craine of
Charlotte; three brothers,
Marvin Edmonds of Charlotte,
Johnnie Edmonds of Weaver
ville and Guy Edmonds of
Mars Hill; and 14 grand
children.
Firewood Permits Are
Available In Hot Springs
Permits for firewood in a
specially designated area
along Hicks Branch Road, in
the 13-MIie Strip area, will be
sold at the District Ranger's
office, U. S. Forest Service,
Hot Springs. N.C. beginning
July 1, ISM.
Permits will cost $10.00 for
two (S) cords per household.
Only one permit will be issued
per household. The area will
open from August l through
September 1 and from October
3 through October 27. Hours
will be from 11 :00 a.m. to 7:00
p.m. on Wednesday and
Thursday and from S:oo a.m.
to 6:30 p.m. on Friday and
Saturday. The area will be
closed on Sunday, Monday and
Tuesday. During rainy or ex
tremely wet periods the area
will be closed to protect the
road and provide for the safe
ty of the permittee.
To reach this area, turn off
Interstate 40 at the Harmon
Den Exit and go south across
the Pigeon River on Buzzard
Roost Road (Forest Service
Road 288). Travel approx
imately 3 miles and turn left
on the Hicks Branch Road into
the area. A Forest Officer will
be stationed in the area during
open hours to check cutters in
and out. Anyone cutting
firewood in this area must be
checked out of the area when
cutting is completed.
DOT Hearing
Set For July 24
RALEIGH - State
transportation officials will
hold a hearing in Madison
County July 24 to get public
reaction to department plans
for a new road between NC 63
southeast of Trhist and Secon
dary Road 1135 at Paynes
Chapel.
The hearing will begin at 7
p.m. in the Madison County
Courthouse in Marshall.
