Ctiendar of Church Events Homecoming At Ponders' Chapel Homecoming services will be held on Sept. 16 at the Ponder s Chapel Baptist Chuirch in Marshall. Dinner will be served following the morning worship service. The Rev. Joe Smith of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church will deliver the afternoon message. Pastor D.E. Lytle invites everyone to attend. The Walnut Cemetery in Walnut is funded entirely by donations from businesses and individuals. Those with family members buried in the cemetery are asked to make their donations to Valerie Guthrie, 41 Academy Rd., Marshall, N.C. Mars Hill Receives Donations MARS HILL- Mars Hill College has received $45,000 from several founda tions, plus a new scoreboard for the athletic field and a new car, accor ding to Dr. Fred B. Bentley, college president. Three foundations have contributed to the college recently. $10,000 has been received from the Love Founda tion to endow and Educational Assistance Fund. This fund will help needy students with special inciden tal expenses such as the purchase of books, music, laboratory materials, and emergency travel in case of il lness. The fund will be administered by the Director of Financial Aid. Ttie Love Foundation is a family founda tion begun by Martha and Spencer Love in 1947. It supports a broad range of activites in N. C. with em phasis on education, the arts, medicine and Protestant churches. The Stonecutter Foundation con tributed $5,000 to the college for the purchase of micro-computers for stu dent use in Mars Hill's new computer information science major This foun dation is company -sponsored and was incorporated in 1944. It was establish ed for broad support of local projects with an emphasis on education and medicine. The Taylor Foundation has made an unrestricted $30,00 gift to the col lege also. Founded by family members in 1950, the Denver, Col orado foundation supports a broad range of activities with emphasis on education, youth agencies and hospitals. The Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Asheville has contributed a new scoreboard for the college's Meares Athletic Field. The new scoreboard, which will be installed within the next two weeks, will have the facility to keep score for the college's soccer team as well as the football team A new automobile has been receiv ed by the college, donated by a member of the school's Board of Trustees, who wished to remain anonymous. The car will be used by the Office of Admissions in student recruitment. "Mars Hill College is exceptionally fortunate to have friends as generous as these foundations, companies, and individuals,'' stated Dr. Bentley. "It is with their help that we are able to continue to meet the high standards we have established for the college. Its students, and the community." \t. X Jefferson Pilot Endows Seat At MHC MARS HILL The Jefferson Pilot Corporation of Greensboro has awarded Mar* itUI College *25,000 which wtyl be added to an endowed professorship established by a similar grant last April. "The continuing support of the Jef ferson Pilot Corporation is a tribute to Mars Hill's academic program," stated College President, Or. Fred. B. Bentley, "and a recognition of the ? high standards we are continuing to set and meet." Proceeds from the endow tun ent are awarded to a facutly member chosen by the college's president in recogni tion of lus or her outstanding con tributions and is not restricted to any particular discipline. The award is in addition to the recipient's salary. The first, and current, Jefferson Pilot Professor is Dr. Jack N. Grose, chairman of the Department of Business Administration and Economics. A Mars Hill alumnus. Or. Groaa holds an undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University, a MBA degree from the University of South Carolina, and received his doc torate from Mississippi State Univer sity. He has been a member of the col lege's faculty since 1M4, and was named chairman of the department in 1972. The Jefferson Pilot Corporation was formed in 1M6, when the Pilot Life and Jefferson Standard Life In surance companies came under com mon ownership. Since the, the com pany has expanded into other fields, including other areas of insurance as well as the communications field and now owns newspapers, radio and television stations, and a television production company.
