Patriots Win!
Sneed, Jones And Ponder
Score TDs In 25-0 Romp

Their cheerleaders arrived late and
only a few dozen of their supporters
were in the stands, but the Madison
Patriots didn't seem to need any en
couragement Friday night at Polk
Central H.S. as they rolled to a 2W
win in their best game of the season
Friday's victory snapped a
12- game win] ess streak that began in
1982 and upper the Pats' season totals
to 1-2-1 as they prepare to open Ivy
Conference play Friday night in
Weaverville.
Senior halfback David Sneed open
ed the scoring barrage with a 20-yard
end run early in the first quarter.
Before the Patriot cheerleaders ar
rived, James Jones added a second
TO with a six-yard plunge in the se
cond quarter. Madison failed on tvro
extra point attempts, but held a 12-4
edge at the half.
The Madison offense, contained to
only one TD in three games prior to
Friday night, erupted throughout the
evening. Jones turned in his beat
rushing performance of the season
Friday night with 118 yards. David
Sneed also ran for big yardage
throughout the night.
The Patriot passing game was also
lethal, accounting for 175 yards on 21
attempts by QBs Mark Gosnell and
Dale Ponder.
Gosnell connected with David
Sneed on a 35-yard screen pass in the
third quarter to give Madison an lfrO
edge. Chris Kramer connected on the
extra point attempt for his first varsi
ty score.
Jones nearly picked up his second
touchdown of the night in the fourth
quarter. The Patriot senior in
tercepted a Polk Central pass at the
Madison 40 and scampered 60 y arete
downfield for the score. The fine rwi
was erased, however, when the
Patriots were cited for a clipping
penalty on the run back.
Despite the penalty. Dale Ponder
marched the Patriot* downfieid for
their final score of the night. Ponder
called his own number and, following
a key block from Neil Lewis,
scampered down the sidelines for a
25-yard TD.
When the Patriot offense wasn't
moving the ball, the Patriot defense
was chasing the Polk Central
quarterback or forcing fumbles. Once
again, Madison received a strong
defensive performance from Jeff Sut
tles, Greg Wall in, Bobby West and
Greg Taffer. Taffer and Wallin com
bined for several sacks, including one
that set Polk Central back 22 yards.
Madison opens Ivy Conference play
Friday night against North Bun
combe in what should be a defensive
struggle. The Blackhawks lost a 14-6
decision to West Henderson Friday
night.

You aro away, yot ever
near, your pretence fills
each day. Your voice, your
smile are everywhere a
memory away. To some you
may be forgotten, to others
a part of the past. To us,
Allen, who lost and loved
you, your memory will
always last. It broke our
hearts to lose you, but you
did not go alone. For part of
us went with you, the day
God called you home. Your
memory is a keepsake,
with that we will never part.
God has you in his keeping,
but we have you in our

Mars Hill
Loses, 38-6
The Mars Hill Lions had their
three-game winning streak brought
to an abrupt halt Saturday night in
Newberry as the host Indians rolled
to a 38-6 win in a South Atlantic Con
ference game.
Newberry opened the scoring as
Kenneth Pressley intercepted a Sean
Bowles pass and ran it in 40 yards for
a score.
A Lion fumble at the Indian 45 set
up Newberry's second score, a
36-yard field goal by Eddie Taylor.
Mars Hill responded by putting
together its only drive of the night, an
80-yard drive capped by Pete
Calhoun's two-yard TD run. David
Shealy's extra point attempt was
blocked.
Newberry put the game on ice in
the third quarter on a 30-yard pass
play to Darryl Owings. Pete Bember
scored the first of his two second half
TDs on a one-yard plunge. Bember
added a second score in the fourth
quarter.
The loss drops the Lion record to
3-1, 1-1 in SAC-8 play. The Lions
travel to Lynchburg, Va. Saturday
for a game against Liberty Baptist
College.
