Sneed, Jones And Ponder Score TDs In 25-0 Romp ? : & a : ' ? ? 1 ? : Their cheerleaders arrived late and only a few dozen of their supporters were in the stands, but the Madison Patriots didn't seem to need any en couragement Friday night at Polk Central H.S. as they rolled to a 2W win in their best game of the season Friday's victory snapped a 12- game win] ess streak that began in 1982 and upper the Pats' season totals to 1-2-1 as they prepare to open Ivy Conference play Friday night in Weaverville. Senior halfback David Sneed open ed the scoring barrage with a 20-yard end run early in the first quarter. Before the Patriot cheerleaders ar rived, James Jones added a second TO with a six-yard plunge in the se cond quarter. Madison failed on tvro extra point attempts, but held a 12-4 edge at the half. The Madison offense, contained to only one TD in three games prior to Friday night, erupted throughout the evening. Jones turned in his beat rushing performance of the season Friday night with 118 yards. David Sneed also ran for big yardage throughout the night. The Patriot passing game was also lethal, accounting for 175 yards on 21 attempts by QBs Mark Gosnell and Dale Ponder. Gosnell connected with David Sneed on a 35-yard screen pass in the third quarter to give Madison an lfrO edge. Chris Kramer connected on the extra point attempt for his first varsi ty score. Jones nearly picked up his second touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter. The Patriot senior in tercepted a Polk Central pass at the Madison 40 and scampered 60 y arete downfield for the score. The fine rwi was erased, however, when the Patriots were cited for a clipping penalty on the run back. Despite the penalty. Dale Ponder marched the Patriot* downfieid for their final score of the night. Ponder called his own number and, following a key block from Neil Lewis, scampered down the sidelines for a 25-yard TD. When the Patriot offense wasn't moving the ball, the Patriot defense was chasing the Polk Central quarterback or forcing fumbles. Once again, Madison received a strong defensive performance from Jeff Sut tles, Greg Wall in, Bobby West and Greg Taffer. Taffer and Wallin com bined for several sacks, including one that set Polk Central back 22 yards. Madison opens Ivy Conference play Friday night against North Bun combe in what should be a defensive struggle. The Blackhawks lost a 14-6 decision to West Henderson Friday night. Newberry opened the scoring as Kenneth Pressley intercepted a Sean Bowles pass and ran it in 40 yards for a score. A Lion fumble at the Indian 45 set up Newberry's second score, a 36-yard field goal by Eddie Taylor. Mars Hill responded by putting together its only drive of the night, an 80-yard drive capped by Pete Calhoun's two-yard TD run. David Shealy's extra point attempt was blocked. Newberry put the game on ice in the third quarter on a 30-yard pass play to Darryl Owings. Pete Bember scored the first of his two second half TDs on a one-yard plunge. Bember added a second score in the fourth quarter. The loss drops the Lion record to 3-1, 1-1 in SAC-8 play. The Lions travel to Lynchburg, Va. Saturday for a game against Liberty Baptist College.
