Mattie Carver Funeral services were held Thurs day afternoon for Mattie Ractai Carver of Route J, Mars Hill who died on Oct. 16 in her home at the age o/M Services were held in the Little Ivy Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Joe Honeycutt and E. W. Jenkins of ficiating. Burial was conducted in the church cemetery. A native of McDowell County, tfhe had lived in Madison County for the past 90 years. She was the daughter of . the late Teague and LUlie Stafford Carver. She is survived by a daughter, Mae Thomas, with whom she made her home; and six grandchildren. Fannie Briscoe Funeral services were held Thurs day afternoion for Fannie Henaon Briscoe of Mars Hil who died Oct. 14 in her home at the age of 91. Services were held in the Mount Olive Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. J.R Smith officiating. Burial was con ducted in the church cemetery. A native of Yancey County, Mrs. Briscoe lived in Madison County far most of her life. She was a daughter of the late John and Lizzie Wilson Hereon and the widow of Gilbert Briscoe, who died in 1942. Surviving are five daughters, Mary Davidson, Augusta Ray and Cindy Ray, all of Mars Hill, Paris Hunter of Morganton and Elizabeth Young of Johnson City, Tenn.; four sons, Manuel, James and David Briscoe, all of Mars Hill, and Thomas Briscoe of Asheville; two sisters, Brinnie Barnette and Flora Anderson, both of Asheville; two brothers, Gaither Hen son of Asheville and Zeb Henaon of Burasville; 33 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 12 great great-grandchildren . Ella Taffer Joint funeral services were held Friday afternoon for Ella Shelton ' Taffer of Jupiter Rd. who died Oct. 16 at the age of 78, and her son, Woodrow Taffer of Calhoun, Tenn., who died Oct. 17 at the home of his brother, the Rev. James Taffer of Asheville. Services were held in the Mount Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Sprouse, Lloyd Ponder and Jay Blankenship officiating. Burial was conducted in the Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Taffer had made her home in Bun combe County for the past four years. She was the daughter of the late Pete and Daisy Ray Shelton. Mrs. Taffer was also a retired private nurse and a member of the Bethany Baptist Church of Melbourne, Fla. Mr. Taffer was also a native of Madison County. He had made his home in Calhoun for the past nine years. He was an employee of Westvaco, a Baptist and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Mrs. Taffer is survived by her hus band, Otis Taffer; Ave daughters, Shirley Hastings of Amelia, Va., Georgia Banks of Iverness, Fla., and Iva Lee Honeycutt, Juanita Hensley and Virginia Hoyie, all of Weaver ville; two sons, teh Rev. James Taf fer of Ashe ville and William P. Taffer of Melbourne; 22 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. In addition to his father, brothers and sisters, Mr. Taffer is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Taffer of Rich mond, Va.; and three sons* Elwood Taffer of Richmond, Woody Taffer of Atlanta and Marie Taffer of the home. A native of Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Jeff and Mary Wingo Morrow and the widow of Lawrence Freeman, who died in 1981. Mrs. Freeman was a graduate of Weaver College and taught school in Madison County schools. She was a member of the Little Sandy Mush United Methodist Church. She is survived by three daughters, Wanda Spivey pf Fairview and Betty Jean Sea ley and Kathleen Franklin of Leicester; two sons, Don Freeman of Leicester and George Freeman of Alloway, N.J.; a brother, Herman Morrow of Black Mountain; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Tom Shook Funeral services were held Mon day afternoon for Tom Anderson Shook of Route 3, Mars Hill who died Saturday in his home at the age of 80. Services were held in the Mt. Bethel Free Will Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Jay Blankenship, Elmer Ed wards and Robert Ballard officiating. Burial was conducted in the Upper Laurel Cemetery. A lifelong resident of Madison County, he was the son of the late Geter and Etta Hensley Shook. Mr. Shook was a retired farmer. He is survived by his wife, Neil Hensley Shook ; three daughters, Lisa Althea Stanley of Weaverville and Verna Shook and Carolyn Davis of Mars Hill; three sisters, Hulda Hall and Eliza Metcalf of Mars Hill and Mae Mace of Marshall ; two brothers, Johnny Shook and Riley Shook of Mars Hill; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. r Card Of The family of Dillard Un^toab^hTta?^kMa of or loved one. The beautiful flowers, cards and food were gratefully appreciated John and Dawn Edward* Asheville Woman Killed A 21-year old Asheville woman was lolled early Monday morning when her car ran off the road and struck a tree in a single-car accident north of Mars Hill. State Highway Patrol Trooper Jerry D. Tapp reported that Melissa Ann Gregory of Route 9, Asheville, was killed when the 1965 Buick she was driving on Little Laurel Rd. ran off the pavement and struck a tree. The accident occurred some 19 miles north of Mars Hill. Cause of the acci dent has not been determined. A passenger in the car, Karen Ruth Moseley, 23, of Rt. 3, Asheville, was slightly injured in the wreck. Tapp reported that she was taken to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, but hospital authorities said there was no record of her visit. Trooper Tapp said Gregory was ap parently driving Moseley to her home at the time of the accident. Neither woman was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. RHONDA ENGLISH, a 1984 graduate of Madison Hgh School, has been named as a recipient of a James G.K. McClure scholarship. She is a first-year student at Ashe ville- Buncombe Technical College enrolled in the nursing program. Rhonda is the daughter of Jack and Arlene English of Mars Ifill. Rev. Layman has aerved aa a member of the achooi's Board of Ad viaors and Trustees and is currently a member of the committee on nomina tions, general board, executive com mittee and public affairs committee. He aiao aerved on the Council of Christian Life of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention. He has alao served aa president of the Raleigh Baptist Association Pastors' Conference and the ex ecutive committee of the Wilmington Baptist Association. In announcing the award, college preaident Fred Bentiey said, "Allen Laymon has been of invaluable ser vice in his community, his church, Mars Hill College and the North Carolina Baptiat State Convention." Rev. Laymon attended Bob Jones University and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
