Living And Growing Hv IW. C'AHI. Ml'.MPOWKIt "Reach For It" The guy in front of me works for a local plant. He makes good money, has pretty fair job security, and the benefits can't be beat. On the surface of things, my friend has it made when it comes to work. There's a problem The reason he's sitting in my office is the depression. He's so down his eyes are about to fall out. The job feeds him physically, but it's killing him emotionally. Money and security is important. But hey folks, these two aren't the be all and end all of life. Growth, challenge, stimulation, newness, and creativity are also important. Lack of food is not the only way to starve a person to death. Take a man like my friend. He's bright, perceptive, and very talented. His job requires none of these, and so he spends his working day going through the motions and getting by. He reminds me of a wind ed endurance runner struggling to complete the race My friend once used the term "golden handcuffs" to describe his delimma. He's both supported and cursed by his job. He anguishes over his trapped feelings, but taking steps toward growth are coming hard. He feels paralyzed Thirguy is not unique. Many of us struggle in quiet and not so quiet desparation. tt takes a toll on our physical and tmotional health, and most importantly, wastes the most precious gifts- time! The movie star Betty Davis once said that without guts there is no jjlory, Guts meaning a willingness to take a chance and go for it. Sure, a person should use a measure of maturity and thoughtfulness in this kind of decision, but John Wayne types aren't the only ones with courage. There are a million of ex amples of people like you and I who are willing to test life and themselves. Take a look at your own cir tators attended the annua!
