Obituaries . t* Lydia Holcombe Lydia Banks Holcombe, 101, of Route 2 Canton, died last Thursday in a Haywood County nursing home. A native of Madison County, she had lived in Haywood County since 1M2. She was a member of California Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Andrew and Rachel Robinson Banks and the wife of Joseph W. Holcombe, who died in 1970. Surviving are two daughters, Bon nie Promos and Helen Coleman of Canton; four sons, Wayne Holcombe of Marion, Brad Holcombe of Weaverville, Thurman Holcombe of Holland, Mich., and Howard Holcombe of Waynesville; a sister, Lucy Eatmon of Lewis ton, Idaho; 34 grandchildren; and, 10 great grandchildren. Services were held Sunday in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home. The Rev. Carter Parham of ficiated. Burial was in New Cruso Cemetery. Douglas Gray .Douglas Gray, 80, of 16 Twin Hills, Weaverville, died Friday. Memorial services were held Sun day in Foster Memorial Seventh-Day Adventist Church. - Karo Rice Karo Rice, 75, of 410 Bull Creek Road, Marshall, died Saturday. A lifelong resident of Madison County, he was a carpenter. He retired from Stawberry Hill Printing Press and was a son of the late Rom and Allie Messer Rice. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Ward Rice; two daughters, Edna Altaian and Martha Kate Rice, both of Marshall; a son, Grady Rice of Marshall; five sisters, Mildred Max well of Mars Hill, Clara Penley of Asheville, and Carrie Moore, Evelyn Hollifield and LoVinia Moore, all of Marshall; a brother, Wade Rice of Marshall; and, three grandchildren. Service* were held Tuesday in Bull Creek Baptist Church, where he was a member. The Revs. Bill Jones, Joseph Reese and Stanley Peek of ficiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Iris Meroney Iris Adella "Shug" Meroney, 80, of Murphy, died Saturday in a Murphy medical center. She was a lifelong resident of Cherokee County, the daughter of the late John Stanley and Delia Phillips Meroney. She was a former assistant librarian at Murphy library and member and Sundayschool teacher at Murphy United Methodist Church. Surviving are five nieces, Tabatha Abernathy Ross of Andrews, Dr. Jon nie Spaulding of Columbia, S.C., Sarah A. Ledford of Dawsonville, Ga., Mary A. Hall of Weaverville and Sarah Jean Weir Edwards of Weston, Mass. Services were held Monday in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Routh officiated. Burial was in Harshaw Chapel Cemetery. Floyd Ponder Floyd L. Ponder, 91, of Route 3 Mars Hill, died Saturday at his residence. Ponder, a lifelong resident of Madison County, was a retired carpenter and graduate of James D. Vaughn School of Music. He was an evangelistic singer and belonged to Bald Creek Masonic Lodge No. 397 AF ft AM. Surviving are his wife, Delda Buckner Ponder; two daughters, Mildred Metcalf and Gladys Ball, both of Mara Hill; three sons, Leonard Ponder of Asheville, David Ponder of Duncansville, Pa., and Clif ford Ponder of Greenville, S.C.; IS grandchildren; and, seven great grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday in Up per Laurel Baptist Church, where he was a member and oldest deacon. The Revs. Cline Hensley Jr. and David Allman officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with rites by Bald Creek Masonic Lodge. Lucille Hughey Lucille Hughey, 56, of 40 Hilltop Drive, Candler, died Sunday at her home. A Madison County native and Bun combe County resident for 18 years, she was a daughter of the late Elon Leburn and Annie Mae Metcalf Greene. Surviving are her husband, Warren Harding Hughey; a daughter, Shirley Mae Jones of Arden; two sisters, Ed na Gay Rice and Helen Louise Franklin of Asheville; five brothers, Ellis and Bruce Greene, both of Asheville, Dellis Greene of Marshall, Bon Greene of Taylors, S.C., and Don Greene of Weaverville; and, a grand son. Services were held Tuesday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home. The Rev. Elbert Jenkins of ficiated. Burial was in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. Pearl Shipley Pearl Shipley, 86, of 2469 Washington, Lincoln Park, Mich., died Sunday. A native of Madison County, she had lived in Lincoln Park for several years. She was the wife of the late Floyd Shipley. Surviving are a daughter, Edna Jenkins of Oteen; and, three sons, Tom Shipley of San Diego, Calif., Charles Shipley of Albuquerque, N.M., and Claude Shipley of Lincoln Park. Services were held Wednesday in the chapel of Bowman Funeral Home. The Rev. Larry Melton of ficiated. Burial was in Bowman Rector Cemetery. Rev. Gus Ledford The Rev. Gus Ledford, 80, of Route 4 Bald Mountain, Burnsville, died Sunday. A Yancey County native, he was a son of the late Amos and Willie Fender Ledford and a retired minister. Surviving are hit wife, Sylvia Angel Ledford; six daughters, Magdalene Horstman of Baltimore, Md? Opal Grant of Essex, Md., Faye Smith of Mars Hill, Mabel Getz of Weaver ville, Ruth Gibbs of Columbus and Maude Wilson of Asheville; five sons, Sam, Prank, Hiram, Glen and the Rev. James Ledford, all of Burn sville; three sisters, Harriet Estep and Margaret Cole of Burnsville and Lora McKinney of Marshall; two brothers, Arthur Ledford of Enka and Dave Ledford of Burnsville; 15 grandchildren; and, four great grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday in Bee Log Baptist Church. The Revs. Troy McCurry, Jack Silvers and Jerome Honeycutt officiated. Burial was in Fender Cemetery, Bee Log. Marion Allen Marion Gibbs Allen, 82, of 263 S. Main St., Mars Hill, died Sunday in a Madison County health care center. A lifelong resident of Madison County, she was a former employee of R.S. Gibbs Country Store and was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late R.S. and Kate Jarvis Gibbs Sr. Surviving are a sister, Shirley Carter of Mars Hill; and, a brother, R.S. Gibbs Jr. of North Wilkesboro. Services were held Wednesday in the chapel o I Capps Funeral Home. The Revs. Richard Price and Jarley Jolley officiated. Burial was in Mars Hill Cemetery. Delia Tread way Delia Katherine Treadway, 67, of UO Carlton Drive Mauldin, S.C., died Monday in a Simpson ville, S.C., hospital. A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Lucas R. and Carrie Chandler Rector. She was a member of Shannon Forest Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband, Jerry H. Treadway; four daughters, Audrey Russell of Maulding, Carolyn Wiggins and Linda Forbes of Green ville, S.C., and Debra Jean Treadway of the home; a son, Lucas J. Tread way of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Rosalee Taylor of Beaumont, Texas; two brothers, Fred Rector of Walnut and John Herbert Rector of Odessa, Fla.; and, 13 grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday in Foundation Inn, S.C., under the direc tion of Cannon Funeral Home. Terrell Roberts Sr. Terrell N. Roberts Sr., 86, of Reva, Md., died recently in an Annapolis hospital after a brief illness. A native of Madison County, be was a retired carpenter and architect and a naval veteran of World War 0. He was a son of late Adolphus and Pricilla Dalton Roberts of Marshall. Surviving are four daughters, Frieda Moy of Reva, Pricilla Whit field of Mesa, Ariz., Patricia Lemon of Pheonix, Ariz., and Lydia Roberts of Ventura, Calif.; five sons, Terrell N. Roberts Jr. of Landover, Md., Terry Roberts of Wheaton, Md., Jim mie Roberts of Edgewater, Md., Charles Roberts of Oxnard, Calif., and Eugene Roberts of Tennessee ; 25 grandchildren; and, 42 great grandchildren.
