Owen Drops i North Buncombe 1 To Win Crown North Buncombe's Black Hawks lost a 74-68 decision to Owen High School at Swannanoa Friday night as J the Warhorses sewed up the Western ; j Athletic S-A Conference regular season championship. Robin Roberts scored 26 points to lead North Buncombe's offensive ef fort, but it wasn't enough to stop the Warhorses, led by star forward Brad Johnson with a game-high 29 points. North Buncombe was able to rally from a 15- point deficit in the second half, pulling within four points mid ') way through the final quarter. A Black Hawk scoring opportunity, which would have pulled North Bun combe to within one basket, fell short. ' Owen was able to hang onto the lead ?> and preserve the win, hitting seven of ;< eight free throws in the final 60 1; seconds of the game. Kenneth Hall added 17 points for North Buncombe, while Randy McKinney dropped in 13 points. North Buncombe alto lost an earlier game laat week, as Franklin stole a 71-68 squeaker at the Black Hawk's home court last Tuesday. Adam Burrells scored on a follow shot with 6 seconds remaining in the game to give the Panthers the two point victory. Burrells, a forward, finished with 11 points on the night. North Buncombe's Roberts was the game's high-scorer with 34 points. Kevin Hall added 11 for the Black Hawks. In varsity girls' action, Franklin's Cindy Cabe led all scorers to spur the Lady Panthers to a 53-41 win over North Buncombe. Cabe finished with a game-high 2S points. Keitha Tinsley connected for 18 points to lead North Buncombe scorers. North Buncombe's teams are gear ing up for play in the Western Athletic 3-A Conference Tournament, schedul ed to begin today. The Lions ran off 10 straight points j late in the second half of last Wednes - day's game against Barber-Scotia at Chambers Gym to grab a 75-62 win over the Sabers. The Lions had to overcome a 33-29 2 halftime deficit to rally for the vic 1 tory. Paul Davis hit a basket at the mid -* way point of the second half to lift the Lions to a 45-44 margin and give them a lead they would never relinquish. Mars Hill increased its lead to 57-52 before the 10-point scoring spurt over a two-minute span. Tony Davison connected for 21 points to lead Mars Hill's scoring at tack. Jon Hancock and Darell Crocker each added 12 points, while Davis finished with 11 points on the night. Jeffrey Mitchell of Barber-Scotia led all scorers, hitting 2S points for the Sabers. Harold Hunter scored 10 points for Barber-Scotia. In the second Mars Hill Barber Scotia showdown, Sabre point guard Jeffrey Mitchell connected on two free throws with only two seconds re maining in the game to lift Barber Scotia to a 77-75 heartstopper at Con cord on Saturday. Mitchell finished with 26 points to end as the game's high scorer. Mars Hill had trailed by 12 points with nearly three minutes left in the game to pull within two on a Crocker layup with only three seconds to go. The Lions then fouled Mitchell, who hit both free throws to give the Sabres the victory. Crocker hit an un contested layup at the final horn to wrap up the scoring. Crocker Finished with 14 points. Davison was the Lion's high scorer with 17. Shelwyn Klutz contributed 16. Davison also had four assists to up his season total to 401 and break the school assist record of 397 held by James Allen. Allen got the record in the 1977-79 season. Harold Hunter scored 18 points for Barber-Scotia. The Lions got their second win of the week Thursday, downing King College 77-65 for the win at Chambers Gym. Mars Hill outscored King 14-4 to open the second half and give the Lions the victory. Crocker and Hancock each scored 16 points while Davison added 13. Steve Browning led King with 21 points. Mars Hill now stands at 6-5 in con ference play and 1M6 overall. Madison Ends Season ; Looks To Tournament Madison High School's basketball teams wrapped up regular season play on a down note last week, and are now looking toward the Western Highlands 2-A Tournament next week at Mitchell. Madison's Patriots dropped a pair of games last week, including a one point heart breaker to conference foe Mitchell. The Lady Patriots, who finished the years as conference co champion with Mountain Heritage, lost to Mitchell and trounced non conference opponent Sylva-Webster. In action last week at Madison's home court, the Mitchell varsity boys stole a 75-74 win last Tuesday. Tim Chandley scored a game-high 23 points to led the Patriots, but it wasn't enough to boost Madison over Mitchell. Scott Haney poured in 20 points for Madison, while Ross Tomberlin add ed 12 and Michael Cook 11. Steve Nanney connected for 20 points for Mitchell to lead the scoring attack. Ken Burnette scored IS points and pulled down 18 rebounds in the battle of the boards while Mitchell Warren added 10. In varsity girls' action, Mitchell's Lisa McCleUan dropped in 16 points to key a 58-46 win over the Lady Patriots. McClellan also pulled down a school record 26 rebounds. Renee Pitman hit for 14 points for Mitchell and Karen Grogan also hit in double figures, scoring 11 points. Lisa Gahagan of Madison led all scorers with 21 points, including 14 in the final period. Foul shooting proved to be a major factor in the game, as Mitchell hit 14 of 20 free throws in the fourth quarter. In junior varsity action, Mitchell completed its sweep of Madison. The JV girls lost a thrilling 31-90 game in double overtime. Madison's JV boys dropped a 63-58 decision. Against Sylva-Webster on Friday, Patriot Scott Haynie poured in a game-high 33 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the high-flying Eagles. Doug Buchanan scored 25 points for Sylva-Webster and Brandon Beasley drilling in an even 20. Bo Bryant, with 16 points, and Jeff Oebord, with 12, also hit in double figures for the Golden Eagles. Brian Ball scored 18 in a losing cause for the Patriots, and Michael Cook dropped in 13 and Ross Tomberlin 12. The Patriots finished the season at 4-4 in conference play and 15-7 overall. The Lady Patriots used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Sylva Webster 74-62 in varsity girls' play. Lisa Gahagan connected for 17 points for Madison, followed closely by April Brooks with 16, Tamara Anders with 14 and Christy Gragg with a dozen. Stephanie Deitz spurred Sylva Webster with 16 points. Heather Ferguson scored 12 and Missy Crisp added 11. The win boosted the Lady Patriots' overall record to 15-7. They finished at 6-2 in the conference, tied with the Lady Cougars of Mountain Heritage for first place. In junior varsity action, the JV boys lost 73-37 to Sylva-Webster and the Madison girls won a 42-28 deci sion. The Western Highlands 2-A Con ference Tournament is scheduled to begin Tuesday at Mitchell. I j Mars Hill Takes Win On The Road Mars Hill College's Lady Lions had "one for the road" last week to make up for the "one that got away" at home. High Point took a 77-69 victory over Mars Hill at Chambers Gym last Thursday behind a 24-point perfor mance by Angie Green. Pam Brown hit for 20 points to lead the Lady Lions' scoring attack in the losing effort. Lee Ann Enix connected for 18 points for Mars Hill and Missy Buckner contributed 12 points. Tracy Mclver scored 15 points for High Point, while Anita Staton added another 14 points. Enix connected on a jump shot from the top of the key and followed that up seconds later with a pair of free throws to lift the Lady Lions over Barber-Scotia in a 64-63 squeaker. Enix hit her Jump shot with 36 seconds remaining to give Mars Hill a one-point margin at 62-61. Barber-Scotia scored and then foul ed Enix, who hit both free-throw at tempts with 27 seconds left in the game to boost Mars Hill's advantage back up to three points. The Lady Sabers scored another basket for the final 64-63 margin. Enix finished with 20 points in the game. The Lady Lions' record stands at 7-6 in conference action and 12-10 overall. Two Football Recruits Sign With Mars Hill Mars Hill College recently an nounced the signing of two football recruits for the coming season. William Hemphill, a 6-1, 215-pound offensive and defensive lineman from Brevard, and Elijah Askew, a 6-1, 205-pound linebacker and fullback from Rome, Ga., both signed with Mara Hill. Hemphill made 88 tackles, in cluding 12 for lasses, to help lead Brevard's Blue Devils to a #-2 record.
