Athletes Advance In Junior Olympics
Four area athlete# recently com
peted in the itate level of the Junior
Olympic*, held at N.C. State College
in Raleigh June 1*10.
Winning a bronze medel for placing
third in hia age group in pole vaulting
was Stacy Ramaey, a sophomore at
North Buncombe High School.
He ia the son of James A. Ramsey
of Eller Cove and the late Sharon Nor
ton Ramsey, former residents of
Madison County
Also competing at the state level
was Keith* Tinsley, daughter of Mr.'
and Mrs. Keith Tinsley of Weaver
ville. Keitha is a junior at North Bun
combe who took third place in the
young woman's high jump contest.
She also took second in the
400-meter hurdles and third in the
100-meter hurdles. This is Keitha 's
?econd year to make it to advance
past the state competition.
Heather McCWIao, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Bruce McCMlan of
Weaverville. placed fourth in the
100-meter hurdles.
Grayson Bell, son of Mr. and Mrs,
Joe Bell of Weaverville, placed se
cond in both the shot put and discus
contests.
These students all qualified for the
southeast regional competitor to be
held July 10-11 in Raleigh. The com
petition will include athletes from
North Carolina, South Carolina,
Virginia, Georgia and Florida.
If any of the athletes advance from
the regional competition by winning a
first, second, or third place, they will
be eligible to participate in the na
tional competition to be held in Pro
vo, Utah.
Sportsmen License
Fee To Increase
North Carolina sportsmen have
until the end of June to buy lifetime
licenses at current prices.
The price for the lifetime sport
sman's license for North Carolina
resident* will increase from 1300 to
$500 effective July 1.
Applications for these licenses
may be obtained by calling the
N.C. Wildlife Commission's license
section at 733-7896 or writing to the
Commission at 512 N. Salisbury
St., Raleigh, N.C., 27611. Applica
tions may also be found in the
"Wildlife in North Carolina
magaxine. They must be
postmarked by midnight June 30 to
get the liceses at current prices.
Because of a delay in license
printing this year, persons who fish
in North Carolina's inland waters
will get a grace period from July
1-31 before they're required to
have their 1967-88 licenses.
Annual hunting and fishing
licenses are normally issued for a
period beginning July 1 and expir
ing June 30 of the following year.
Persons who do not own an an
nual license, but who usually buy a
daily or three-day license will not
be required to carry a license to
fish until the new licenses are
available at local agents on Aug. 1.
River Float Trip Set
The French Broad River Founda
tion, in conjunction with Carolina
Wilderness Adventures in Hot Spr
ings, is sponsoring a French Broad
River Float Trip on Sunday.
The group will put in at Bent Creek
River Park on N.C. 191 at 1:30 p.m.,
float the calm but scenic stretch of
river - which includes views of
Biltmore Estate - and take out at
Hominy Creek River Park at about 4
p.m. Wine and cheese will be served
after the trip.
The cost of the trip is $5 for founda
tion members and $15 for non
members. The trip is open to the
public.

Kayak, Diving
Lessons Planned
Basic kayak and skin diving lessons
will be taught at the Marshall pool
beginning later this summer.
The cost for the lessons is $30 per
person and all equipment is included.

Basketball, Football Youth
Camps Scheduled For July
Although basketball season is final
ly over and football season is still a
couple of months away, children in
North Buncombe County will have a
chance to polish their skills in these
two sports next month.
The North Buncombe Basketball
Camp is scheduled for July 6-10. The

Edwin B. Grant was recently assign
ed to Madison County where he will
be enforcing state game, fishing and
boating laws and regulations.
A native of Franklin, Grant has
served as a law enforcement officer
with the N.C. Wildlife Resources
Commission since 1988. Prior to his
transfer, he was stationed in Ashe
County.
Grant and his wife, Lisa, have a
daughter, Ashley, age 1. The Grants
live in Mars Hill.
