Historical Marker New In Hot Springs An historical marker was recently erected in honor of a Hot Springs woman's contributions to an English ballad collector. The marker was installed Oct. 6 by the N.C. Department of Archives and History in Hot Springs. It reads: "Balladry: English folklorist Cecil Sharp in 1916 collected ballads in the 'Laurel Country.' Jane Gentry who supplied many of the songs lived here." The marker is located in front of Sunnybank, a house which Gentry and her daughter, Maud Long, ran as a boarding house. Sharp collected 64 songs and ballads from Jane Gentry, more than any other person in this country or in England. She was the granddaughter of Council Harmon of Watauga County whose heirs have carried on the rich heritage of Jack Tales in American. Gentry's Jack Tales appeared in the "Journal of American Folklore" in 1927. Before her death in 1929 she had a reputation as a story teller and singer which extended far beyond Madison County and Hot Springs. Michael Hill of the Department of Archives and History and Or. Harley Jolly presented the marker at the Ba scorn Lamar Lunsford Festival at Mars Hill Collge. Family and friends gathered at Sunny bank, now known as The Inn at Hot Springs, on Oct. 18 to honor Gentry and Long, who recorded her mother's stories and songs for the Library of Congress. Elmer Hall, proprietor of The Inn, was host for the occasion.
