The couple will reside in Weaver ville. ..selected for membership .to join Two Madison Students Join Honor Society The Society of Distinguished American High School Students an nounced recently that two students from Madison High School have been selected as members in its honor society for 1967. Local students accepted as 1987 members are Paula Hamlin and Stephanie Burnet te. The students' sponsor, Pleasant Valley Baptist church, received the society's National Appreciation Award for "devotion to the develop ment and encouragement of student leaders.' Membership in the 19-year-old society is designed to be a national honor and incentive (or top perfor mance among high school students. To be accepted, candidates must ex cel in academics, extracurricular or civic activities. As members, these students will have the opportunity to compete for college scholarships through the Society's National Awards Program. This year, 141 colleges have earmark ed more than (700,000 in scholarship funds for society members. Baldwin Enrolls In Honors Program Teresa Michelle Baldwin, (laughter of Charles Baldwin of Arden and Judy Wolf of Mars Hill, has accepted an in vitation to participate in the Meredith College Honors Program. She is currently a freshman at lith College in Raleigh [ to Dr. Bernard Cochran, of the Honors Program at this is a national program which "identifies gifted and talented students and challenges them to stretch beyond the normal cur riculum." "It creates academic opportunities for some of our students," Cochran said. "It also encourages a student to simultaneously stretch In all areas of college life, not just in the classroom." Governor Honors Area Volunteers Got. Jim Martin hosted a ceremony and recaption honoring Western North Carolina'* outstan ding volunteers aa part of the annual Governor's Volunteer Recognition Ceremony held in Morganton on Oct. Receiving awards for their work with the Marshall Youth Baseball Program were Mattee Mashburn, Ruth Smith and Donna Ward. A reception at the City of Morgan Ion Municipal Auditorium proceeded the awards ceremony durng which Martin presented the honorees with N.C. "State of the Hearts" pins and (tie Governor's Award for Outstan ding Volunteer Service. "This regional recognition is an im portant part of our administration's efforts to encourage the 70 percent of our North Carolina citizens who serve as volunteers," Martin said. "The Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service it North Carolina's tribute to the boundless care and dedication our volunteers so freely give to our com munities and to our great state," he said. Local committees in 45 western counties were invited to choose four award recipients from the categories of community service volunteers, school volunteers and voluteer organizations. County nominations were submitted to the Governor's Of fice of Citizen Affairs. Martin previously recognized outstanding volunteers from central and eastern counties at two regional ceremonies earlier this fall. Marshall PTA Plans Coming Events By BRENDA PARKER Marshall Elementary PTA Reporter The Marshall Elementary Parent Teachers Association will sponsor several events in November and December. The PTA has agreed to participate in a fund-raising dinner with the Mar shall Primary PTA. The dinner will be held Dec. 6 at the elementary school cafeteria. The PTA is asking for donations of potatoes and store bought green beans. For more infor mation or to make a donation, please contact Don Massey. The PTA is also asking for help in gathering good toys and clothing for needy families. Members are asked to bring these items to the Nov. 17 meeting. The labels from Campbell's pro ducts is being collected by the school to be used to obtain classroom materials. The PTA will discuss these events in full at the meeting and would like to encourage all parents and guar dians of Marshall Elementary students to attend and participate in the PTA program. 18 FBLA Members Attend Conference Eighteen Future Business Leaders of America members at North Bun combe High School attended the FBLA District VIII Pall Leadership Conference recently at T.C. Roberson High School. Special speakers were Bob Terrell of the Asheville-Citizen Times and state FBLA president Brian Worrell. Students attended a number of workshops on topics including time management, parliamentary pro cedure and dress and make-up tips for business. FBLA members are making plans for a type-a-thon to be held Saturday, Dec. 5, at the school from 9 a.m. until noon. Students will be asking for sponsors to underwrite them at 25 cents a typewritten page, with a minimum of 10 pages. The type-a-thon is one of the fund raising projects that FBLA will be having this year to raise money for their participation in North Bun combe's beautification program and for their community-service project. A daughter, Leslie Elizabeth, was born to S. Sgt. James S. Hunter and Vickie Merrill Hunter of Cherry Point on Oct. 23. Grandparetns are Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hunter and Mr. and Mrs. Hardy Merrill of Mars Hill. Card Of Thanks The family of Jessie B.
