Cc Weaverville Council To Meet The Weaverville Town Council will meet Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Weaverville Town Hall. Hot Springs Christmas Parade Set The Hot Springs Christmas Parade will be held at 2 p.m. in downtown Hot Springs. Santa will be at Town Hall after the parade fpr pictures, and music may be played, weather per mitting. School Board Meeting Continued The Madison County Board of Education will continue its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the Little Theater of Madison High School. Marshall Board Continues Meeting The Marshall Board of Aldermen will continue its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Marshall Town Hall. Hot Springs Board To Meet The Hot Springs Board of Aldermen will continue its special meeting, which began last Monday, at S p.m. Tuesday at Hot Springs Town Hall. FBEMC Announces Schedule French Broad Electric Membership Corp. will be closed next Thursday and Friday for the Christmas holidays. Optimists Sell Pecans The Madison County Central Optimist Club will be selling pecans for their Christmas Cheer for needy children program. Pecans are $4 per pound, shelled, and can be bought at Mary's Restaurant, The News Record and First Union Bank. Walnut Creek Contest To Be Held The Walnut Creek Community Development Club will spon sor a Christmas lighting contest Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place win ners with the best over-all decorations. Ebbs Chapel VFD To Sponsor Party The Ebbs Chapel Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a children's Christmas party Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. Also at this time, the department will conduct a child registry pro gram in cooperation with the Madison County Sheriff's Department. Holiday Blood Drive Planned The 13th annual Red Cross Holiday Bloodmobile will be held at the First Baptist Church in Asheville on Tuesday, Dec. 29, '? ? 11 1 from noon to 6 p.m. The goal for this mobile is 250 bio* donors. Hot Springs Holiday Contest Planned Judging for the Hot Springs Christmas Lighting Contest will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday. First prize for the best-decorated home and business will be $25. A second prize of $15 and a third prize of $10 will also be given in the residential contest. Mars Hill Planning Board To Meet The Mars Hill Planning and Zoning Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday) in Town Hall. Club Sponsors Lighting Contest The annual Christmas Lighting Contest sponsored by the Walnut/Brush Creek Community Development Club will be held Monday from 6-8 p.m. Calendar Deadline Announced The deadline for items in The News Record's "Community Calendar" and "Church News" is noon Tuesday prior to publication. Items received after noon cannot be accepted. Tree Drawing To Be Held The Dry Ridge Museum will sponsor a fund-raising event with a raffle for a live, fully decorated Christmas tree. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased at the Weaverville Library. The drawing will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the library. Optimists To Sell Trees The Green Valley-Mars Hill Optimist Club will sell Christmas trees to benefit the youth of Madison County begin ning Tuesday on Carl Eller Road, Mars Hill. Unaka Center To Sponsor Bingo The Unaka Center, Inc. will sponsor bingo games Saturday starting at 3:30 p.m. following the Hot Springs Christmas parade at the community center. Charge will be 25 cents per card. Marshall Candlelight Tour Tonight The Marshall Candlelight Tour of Homes will be held today (Thursday) at 5 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person, children under 12 free. Big Ivy Christmas Contest Today The Big Ivy Community Development Club will judge the "Light Up Big Ivy" Christmas lighting contest today (Thurs day), with cash prizes to the winner and honorable mention to the best display on each road involved in the contest. Jordan Appoints Swain, Winter Lt. Gov. Robert Jordan has ap pointed two Buncombe County senators to serve on legislative study commissions. Jordan appointed Sen. Robert S. Swain to the Tall Structure-Airport Study Commission and the Property Tax Appraisal Study Commission. He | also appointed Sen. Dennis Winner to the Special Legislative Commission on Fairness and appointed him Senate co-chairman of the Judicial Selection Study Commission. Among others feautured in the parade will be the Clemson Tiger Car, member* of the ROTC of Cherokee, the chief or vice chief of the Cherokee Indian Tribe, the Madison High School Band, show horses and clowns. Several groups and floats will be competing for first-, second- and third-place trophies. Following the parade, folks can have their picture taken with Santa at Town Hall, play bingo at the Unaka Center, listen to live gospel music and enter tickets for the drawing to be held. The drawing will be for 23 separate prizes ranging from an oil change to an afghan valued at $US. The prizes were contributed by local merchants who are providing ticketa to customers. A list of participating merchants will be posted in town. The town is also sponsoring a Christmas decorating contest for homes and businesses. These will be judged Friday night. Burley Markets Close Barley tobacco markets were scheduled to close today for the Christmas holidays, with sales to resume again Jan. 4. Warehouses will begin accep ting tobacco again on Dec. 28. Average prices for tobacco sold so far this season have been at or slightly below last year's average price of $1.56 per pound. For the second year in a row, a lengthy summer drought has sharply reduced that amount of marketable tobacco crop in Western North Carolina.
