Cotton and Τobacco a Great _ Asset The year» 1 920 and 1921. will be long remembered by the pres ent generation, both old and young. The deflation in die ppce or cot ton. and tobacco unwarranted and unjustified happening after the t GREAT WORLD WAR, haa wrecked the whole agricultural indus try and caused more mercantile failure· and suicide· than ever be fore recorded. _ _ It cams like a cyclone sweeping the country; the damage has been done and was unavoidable. JOHNSON Bennon, . i regret the nscsssity for calling to the attention of the votera of Harnett County a few facta which are being mis represented by over-zealoua friend· of my opponent·. let. A few factk with reference to myself: 1 waa born in New Jersey, and when a few months old my parent* moved to South Carolina where 1 attended the public school· at Bishopville and die high school· at Charleston. My father died when I waa 13 years old, and 5 years later my mother died, leaving a email —tate. which, by agreement among all my brother· and Meters, went exclusively for the care and maintenance of my 2 younger brother· and I younger aiatter. I wa· immediately, therefore, confronted with the neceeeity of making my own way in the world. At 21 year· of age 1 married a young lady at Four Oalca, N. C, «till with a determination to finish my education and study law, 1 shordy thereafter entered Wake Forest College, securing my license to prac tice law at the Fall term 1915. 1 have had no financial as sistance, either during this time or since, from friends or relatives. Nevertheless I DEFY MY OPPONENTS TO IMPEACH MY INTEGRITY. 2nd. A few fact* with reference to my residence, etc. : It is going oca wvtn years since i moved into Harnett County nom Johnston. I began the practice of law at Coats in 1916 (Spring.) Since residing here 1 have served for two terms as Mayor of Coat·. I have been chairman and served in other capacities on Red Cross, War Savings Stamps and Liberty Loan Committees. During Ae war I made no less than 25 speeches in various parts of the County in' behalf of thee thing. (Read below a copy of letter received by me from War Department.) My young' er brother (who was then unmarried) served more than ** two years in Frsncqjj|fei my sister was engaged in war work at Wsshington^^ 3rd. A few facts with reference to my connection with Recorders Court: In 19l9.Col. Don Hugh McLean appointed me βοΐια tor of the Recorder'· Court upon recommendation of the ι i held for 2 years. In the Fall Section· of 1920 Col. McLean waT rejected ae Recorder, and appointed MarshfcU Spear· a· Solicitor, while I was appointed by die County Commiwiomri a· Vice-Recorder, an office which paid no salary. Some ax month· later Col. McLean died and I was appointed tfc> fiO his unexpired term,^L>-h 1 am now doing. How well 1 have filled this offic<n^ave to the judgment of the citizens of Harnett County. I have endeavoreato discharge the do ties of the office without fear or favor, I have punished no one for malice, I have left no one unpunished became friendship, relationship or for any cover cause. 1 do not deny that I may have made some mistakes, but this is due to human fallibility. My opponents say that they will make no mistakes—presumably they are infallible. Be lieving that my experience has qualified me to best fill the office—I ASK YOUR SUPPORT. Coats, Ν.
