Bowie, unsuccessful candidate for governor last June advised the North Carolina Merchants Association while in session at Winston-Salem this week "to get into politics," during the course of a speech in which he criticised the sales tax. Mr. Bowie, a prospective candidate for governor taid, "the sales tax, or any other additional tax would not have been neces sary if the legislature had eliminated unnecessary expenses." Balfour Defeated By Mule 42 Years Old Hazelwood 14-10 Playing at Balfour last Saturday, H ;'.el wood proved to be too good for the home team and came away with a win of 14-10. It was rather a one w.iy game through the seventh with Hazelwood leading at the end of the sixth twelve to four. Putnam, pitching for Hazelwood, was relieved in tlie seventh by Powers, who was in turn relieved in the eighth by Rob inson. Putnam was in rare form and p:tche.l exceptionally good ball, al lowing the opposition only three hits in six innings. Murphy started on tin- mound for lii'lt'oiir. but the Hazelwood sluggers se. med to solve his delivery so easily th.t he was soon relieved by "Lefty" II .' nnnond. Still Works In Field ( Catawba-News Enterprise.) i A mule that is 42 years old and still able to do field work is owned by Mr and Mrs. Walter Moore, who live on a farm on the Catawba river two miles east of Terrell. This particular animal is a bay mule and was raised from a colt by Mr. and Mis. Moore. Its name is Nice" but the only objection that the animal is able to and will in variably chase dogs and chickens which happen to cross the barn lot". Mr. Connor pointed out that the average period of usefulness of mule is between L'o and .'''I years. and liently with two hits each.
