ZTi, mat was passed by the senate
Monday night and has already be
come a law, this being a bill to in
crease the alcoholic content of beer
to five per cent. The opposition to
this bill on the floor of the senate
offered by Senator Thomas H. Steele
of the twenty-fifth Senatorial Dis
trict and coming from the same dis
trict that Representative Turlington
came from, the author of our present
dry law.
The house finally passed the reve
nue and appropriations bill and isent
them across the hall to the senate,
substantially the same as the finance
and appropriation committees report
ed them, with the exception of a chain
filling station tax and the amendment
to tax dividends derived from stocks
of domestic and foreign corporations
Another bill of state wide impor
tance that has passed the senate this
week and was sent across to the
house for their consideration was H
B. 356, a bill to allow judges of Su
perior Courts in their discretion to
sentence persons convicted of murder
in the first degree, burglary in the
first degree, arson or rape to life
imprisonment when the trial jury re
commends mercy.
County Superintendent of Educa
tion, Jack Messer, was in Raleigh this
week shaking hands like a veteran
politician. Also Mr. Coleman of the
Champion Fibre Company was een
around the legislative halls the past
week.
Safety Pin Ii Old
The safety pin originated thousands
of years ago. Among the remains of
the lake dwellers of central Kurope
have been found a great number of
pins some of bone, others of bronze.
Many are quite elaborate, with orna
mental heads, and others are rudely
fashioned. Some have double stems
and few have been found In form ex
actly like the modern safety pin.

There are -too 'many drunks to be
seen in public' along the skyline. Sev
eial days ago there were two togeth
er who loitered on the street for
hours. It started raining but they
were unconsicous Of it. I had heard
of folks not having sense enough to
come in out of a shower of rain but
tha"s the first time I ever saw the
proof.
Seeing so many college students
Rambler
home for the spring holidays reminds
me of what someone said about what
"Dad" gets out of college. He puts
in his dough and in four years it
conies out college bred.
And the president of a great uni
versity said that our colleges and
universities are kept well supplied
with knowledge; that all the fresh
men bring in a little and the seniors
never take any of it away.
So far as Waynesville was con
cerned the picture "Bright Eyes"
starred Freddy Crawford. Of course
Shirley Temple played in it too.
About half of Haywood county saw
it sitting down, the other half stand
ing up. What kind of luck did vou
have ?
Oh, well, wh'ttdayasay we all go out
and look for a diamond ring!
