Of exceptional interest was the On Wednesday evening Miss S-irah
nu tting on Saturday afternoon of the Underwood and 'Miss Elizabeth Rhine
Waynesville Music Club, which was hart entertained with a birthday party

Special guests of the afternoon
were: Mrs. W. H. Davis, Mrs. William
Kay Griffin, and Mrs. Frank Smith, of
Ashtville, all prominent in the State
Federation of Music Clubs and the
members of the Waynesville Junior
Music Club.
Mrs. Lucile Foy, was in charge of
the program, with Spanish music as
the topic of the afternoon It was
an international exchange program
and whi the local club was having
this Spanish program a music club in
Siwin was devoting an afternoon to
the study of American music.
Mrs. Foy first outlined the history
cf the folk song in apain and how
it had developed other forms of musk
Several selections were given, each
illustrating some period or phase or
i haracterietie of development of Span
ish music. First of the group was a
Catalonian Nativity song, by a quartet
composed of Mrs. Olive Green, Mrs
Tom Spurlock, Miss Margaret Walker,
and Miss Mildred Crawtord, with Miss
Grace Crocker, as the accompanist.
In contrast -Miss Crocker played
"Habanera," from Bizet's opera,
"Carmen," showing the lighter man
ner of the gypsy rhythm of the Cas
tilian. As an example of the trop
ical grace and melody Mrs. Olive
Green and Miss Margaret Walker sang
"La Taloma." Miss Mildred Crawford
song "Mi Viejo Amor," in Spanish,
using two Spanish musical instru
ments, the guicharo and mallaca, to
accentuate the rhythm. She was ac
companied by Miss Grace Crocker at
ti.e piano.
An illustration of the manner in
which composers are using their folk
imisie was demonstrated with two
piano numbers by Miss Grace Crock
er, dance rhythm, "Spanish Dance,''
by Enrique Granados, and"Tango,:'
by Isaac Albeniz.
At the close of the program, as is
the custom, with international pro-,
grams presented in America, the
group sang "The Star Spangled Ban
ner." Two vocal numbers were presented
by Mary Stentz, young daughter of
Mr. and Mrs J. Dale Stentz, and
Dorothy Richeson, young daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. L. !1. Richeson, who are
entering the district music contest.
During the brief business session
plans for the coming district meeting
were discussed. Among the guest,
were Mrs. Dewey Stovall, Mrs. R. N
Barber, and Mrs. N. F. Lancaster

Waynesville for the past eighteen

On Friday evening Mrs. Nana
Shankle, who is spending the winter as
a guest at Bhvhwood Hall, entertained
with a beautifully appointed dinner
party. For the occasion the patriotic
motif wais noted in all the details of
serving and the accessories of the
party.
The guests were seated at small
tables, which were centered with
vaso.s of ml carnation;, and clever fa
vors, with cards of red, while and
blue marking 0ach place.
Following thv serving of dinner the
guests enjoyed a spirited game of con
tract. As a result, Mrs. Hugh Massie
was the fortunate winner of the top
score among the women, while Mr.
R. L. Provost made high among the
men. Mrs. Jame-s M. Ixng and Mr.
Wallace Hlackwell were the winners
of the low scows. All prizes were
attractively arranged in red, white
and blue paper and riblnms.
